So we are getting ready to move into our new house on 45 acres and are getting very exciting about finally having another dog. We have narrowed it down to 3. German Shepherd, German Short haired Pointer and Weimeraner. We are really struggling to decide between these three breeds. I will give everyone a bit of background info and then any ideas, opinions or recommendations we'd love to hear.

We will have a large fully fenced area for the dog to be secured.

We have both been dog owners previously and I have done obedience and agility courses and plan to do that with our dog.

We are active and the dog will receive lots of exercise.

We will have chickens in a pen and there are lots of roos around.

Although we live out of town on property we will be going to classes to socialise the dog properly.

We really are stuck as I'm sure they are all great breeds.

I'd go the GSP - they do great at agility stuff...

Funny how I saw 2 of them at Renbury Farm (a pound) today, then come on here and read that someone is thinking of adding one (possibly) to their family. Both of the ones I saw today were lovely dogs.

My wei would have tried to kill the chooks :) and bunnie's, in fact anything small and fluffy that moved!

Sounds like a good home for all the breeds.

Dogmad knows of a 2 year old wei just been surrendered looking for a new home :)

Dog will be allowed inside. Someone will be home full time 4 days out of seven and the other days dog will be alone for 4-5 hours a day. At this stage no plans for a second dog.

Oops. I voted Weim when I meant GSP.

I worked in boarding kennels for a few years and found all these breeds to be quite stressy in a kennel environment... But GSPs the least, so that's why I voted them. :) More positive experiences for me!

I voted GSP as I like the breed and I see a few competing when I do agility. I love GSD as I lived on horse properties that always had them but I am not really sure about their agility ability.

Agility ability isn't of crucial importance, as I have many opportunities for outdoor activities at the property. Obedience training is a definite though

sounds like a good set up for a GSP - in fact that much room to move, sounds perfect for any kind of dog .....

why don't you head over to the subforms for each breed and have a chat with the members there - I'm sure in the other threads like the GSP owners we'd be happy to answer any questions you might have....

I voted GSP :coffee: - I used to have one and he was a lovely, affectionate boy - just LOVED chasing a ball & being active, but cold be just as much of a couch potato as the Poodles, at times.

Wish I had a picture of him lying on the floor with Poodle puppies climbing all over him - unfortunately, that was pre digital camera days.

all lovely breeds :coffee:

so hard to decide. I'd have a GSP personally.

sounds like a wonderful life for any lucky dog!!

The first couple of years of all those breeds can be quite challenging ;) :D

Keep that in mind...

When they reach adulthood though, all would be wonderful (if trained)

Weis are quite large and very strong, I guess all are strong really.

Some GSDs have a lot of coat too, so prickles and hair tumbleweeds... :) You've probably already thought of all this.

GSPs are a lovely breed,

Thought about a vizsla?? ;) :cry::mad

I think Fiona has a great idea. check out the breed forums (where you'll also see the naughty things they all get up to!!) :) :D
