THREE husky pups had a narrow escape from floodwaters after a motorist ignored road closure signs and ploughed his car and the dogs into a creek west of Melbourne.

Police say the 43-year-old man from Plumpton ignored flood signage on Sinclairs Road, Rockbank and drove a ute straight into the Kororoit Creek just before 7pm (AEDT) yesterday.

The man got out of the car and swam to safety, leaving the huskies in the front seat of the ute.

Country Fire Authority rescuers managed to save the pups a short time later.

The 43-year-old driver found at a nearby property is assisting police with inquiries.

Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the incident, a police spokeswoman said.
