I can quote parts of the standards for most gundogs The issue for me is that many of the breeds I am considering I can't meet until I travel interstate. But here are my super fussy requirements (they make you look easy-peasy!): -dual-purpose HPR or retriever that I could also do agility with -generally mentally and physically sound -good with other dogs and not too aloof with strange people -furry (no unfortunately no GSP's,weis, Viz ect) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I am not a huge fan of wire coats... although in my research I have come across some GWP's (or drathaars ) that are the most spectacularly conformed dogs.. at the moment I like Large Munsterlanders, Brittanys and Flat Coated Retrievers.... but that is known to change week to week. I used to think the amount of time and effort I put into my animals was just what everyone else did but can now accept that I'm....well....different They can certainly be trained to have an off switch in the house - my dogs are mostly wherever I am. Sometimes I crate Zig or put Dizzy away as Emmy can't resist having a wrestle. She is definitely more active than your average puppy. When you see one of these dogs out in public they will always be "on" - that said, she is much more relaxed at a dog trial than Zig and will sleep in her crate quite happily. This morning Emmy slept until 8.00am next to my bed. Up and about - cup of tea and dog cuddles on the deck. 9am - 10am: took them to the park in the car. Some loose lead walking training through the local shops and a free (super fast zoomie) run at the park, interspersed with training...heel position, recalls, fronts, stays. 10am - 11am: dogs entertaining themselves on the deck....wrestling, playing and a bit of attention from the humans. 11am - 1pm: we were out so Emmy was in her crate with 2 stuffed Kongs and a lamb neck 1pm - 2pm: home again so dogs in and out with us 2pm - 4pm: out again so Em back in her crate (very tired girl by this stage) with 2 stuffed kongs 4pm - 5pm: home again and preparing food for dinner so Em slept on the cool slate tiles in the kitchen Right now, she is hanging out with Mr TSD whilst I have a lie down. She will probably perk up when it cools down, around 7pm - I will train her with the rest of her biscuit ration and do some puppy retrieves if she has energy to burn. A big carrot to chomp on to keep her occupied while we have dinner and she will have a snuggle on the couch if it is cool enough. She and Zig will be super enthusiastic to go to bed by 10.30pm. Beth. Posted January 15, 2011 Share Posted January 15, 2011 It actually took me a while to get used to my Aussie following me from room to room, so I know where you're coming from. She isn't clingy but she likes to be where the action is so follows us around a lot (thankfully she has quite good body awareness so she rarely 'gets in the way' as such). For example, this morning OH had to lock her out of the room because he was trying to do pushups and she kept coming in and lying right where he wanted to do them. Now that I'm used to it, I don't mind, and it makes me smile when she wags her tail or comes over just because I've looked at her, or to see her curled up at the bathroom door when I come out of the shower You've just described Lottie If you lay down on the floor - she needs to come and see what you're doing and stick her face in and give you licks - but I chose a working dog because of that reason - I wanted a 'one man dog' - I love that she follows me around - but saying all of that - if she's in the same room as me, she'll be laying on the opposite side of the room - isn't really a 'cuddly' dog (except for morning cuddles and when she feels like it) - is more then happy to be outside by herself and just chill for the day!!! Down here we've had ESS doing well in agility and ob - show lines -, and there's a Welshie as well - he's a nice boy - but very much a gun dog - nose dominated - but you could probably work on him the same way you have with Daisy. We've had a feral but heaps of fun Tibetan Terrier - and another one coming through. And we have a super Whippet - some DOLers have seen him at Nationals - varies from completely feral to totally brillisnt. Smithfields would have the same coat considerations as Beardies - they have the same sense of fun, and are are active and drivey, but not OTT. I know they are relatively active breeds. I actually quite like ACDs, but not sure I could own one. Though the well bred ones I love have temperaments that quite appeal to me. An Aussie? I like Aussies but they are probably a bit too common for me (kinda like BCs, Goldies, Labs etc). At the moment a working line ESS is probably appealing to me the most, I've never even considered them, but they seem quite lovely and on paper are ticking all my boxes. I know nothing at all about them though. Damn it, I was going to say ACD until you said this. They tick everyone of your boxes, are you sure??? Spend half a day with one and you will be sold hehe show me another breed that overall copes with disability so well (ie the unfortunate deaf ones) BUT what about a Stumpy Tail? A friend told me about this dog (just tolerate all the 'americaness' of it), he looks like a long tail Stumpy Tail! koalathebear Posted January 15, 2011 Share Posted January 15, 2011 (edited) They will be so popular that soon enough they'll be "common" like Labs, Goldies and Kelpies I am rather partial to labs but OH (who is a cat person) said that if he was going to concede and go doggy, he didn't want a generic-looking dog so absolutely no labs/golden retrievers or border collies. He liked Kelpies because they're relatively rare and unusual in Canada - he is Canadian. I know a lot of Canadians and Americans who have never heard of a Kelpie. I've said: "Do you realise how ubiquitous Kelpies are in Australia, though?" But to him, they're still unusual. To be honest, even in Canberra - we don't see that many Kelpies around, especially purebreds so they still feel rare to him. I guess we'll have to go to the country or something.
