BC Crazy
Hi everyone, I have just brought a my first dog dryer. It is a barrel type, Lazor 2 I think it is called. I absolutely love it ! The problem is my border collie, hates it !!!! He has only ever had one used on him once with the same results. He growls at it & tries to bite the nozzle all the time. My husband had to hold him & I turned it down to the lowest setting & started on his pants area, very slowly, he was O.K. for a second but as soon as I moved it around a bit, GRRRR & snapping again. I managed to get him mostly dried off but would like him not to be so stressed about it. He loves having a bath & is groomed on a daily basis & loves it. I don't know if it is the noise of it or the hose I am holding.Would appreciate any advice or has anyone had any similar issues. Thanks in advance. Crazy Daisy
Some dogs hate the noise and some hate the force of the air. Try having your border on the table covered in a towel with the dryer about a metre away and the nozzle turned away from you. Turn it on while you continue to brush him around the head. Don't make a fuss over turning it on. (If you have someone to help it will make it easier.) While brushing his head try slowly turning the dryer towards him so it goes just by the end of his tail. Again don't fuss and if he reacts give him a down/drop command. Keep it on for 5 mins and if he settles, turn it off for 2 mins and then repeat a couple of times. Next time he gets bathed do it for longer until he gets the idea that if he stays still the whole drying thing happens really quickly Slowly move the towel away from his tail, then back legs etc until he is happy being dried all over. Leave the head for last, most dogs hate having their faces dried. I hope that helps a bit. Edited January 12, 2011 by Crazy Daisy
becks
You could just use it on him gradually at the end of each daily grooming session, so he has a chance to get used to it before needing it to dry him off. Starting by letting him get used to the sound - it can help with some dogs, if they see if being used on another dog (or person!). Also helps to keep the nozzle further away at the start and on the lowest setting, so he gets used to the feel and noise of the air. If it is a heated drier, also make sure the air isn't to hot. Be matter of fact about the whole thing and stop when he is being good, even if you haven't done as much as you wanted.
sas
I'd be conditioning him to it whilst it's not on and then my touching him with it, giving him affection via it, turn it and leave it on the table until he no longer reacts, then pick it up, put it down etc etc.
Jaxx'sBuddy
I'd be conditioning him to it whilst it's not on and then my touching him with it, giving him affection via it, turn it and leave it on the table until he no longer reacts, then pick it up, put it down etc etc. this approach worked for me getting my dog used to having her nails filed using a dremel. i used affection and treats as the reward and i started rewarding any interest in the dremel when it was lying near her then for her sniffing it etc she now sleeps when i file her nails
