Rottsup Posted January 12, 2011 Share Posted January 12, 2011 Hi all, I was just wondering after reading the "Monash Vet" thread where someone commented on a vet thinking her girl had pyo when it was vaginitis. Our bitch just lost her litter during the night between days 48 & 49 after starting a brownish discharge late on day 47 (Saturday). We took her to the vet first thing Sunday morning (day 48) only to be sent to the emergency vet at Essingdon. They did an ultrasound and could see puppies but couldn't work out if they were alive or not due to the bitch panting. They suggested doing an emergency c section and spaying her to which we said no to thankfully. Got her in to see a specialist repro vet Monday morning at 8am... no puppies , no pyo, no temp, red/white blood cell count all good...but mild vaginitis detected which has cleared with antibiotics and the repro vet said he has no idea as to why she would have lost her litter as there were no puppies to examin (think she ate them as vet also said she was too far for them to be reabsorbed) and she had no signs of anything to suggest she was unhealthy in any way (apart from the mild vaginitis) Have any of you out there had the same or similar experience before? What was the outcome? Why did it happen? Did your bitch go on to have a healthy litter afterwards? Thanks in advance for any suggestions or past experiences you may be able to offer. Bisart Dobes Posted January 12, 2011 Share Posted January 12, 2011 Sounds almost identical to my sisters bitch - she bled for 7 days - 1 1/2 days b4 my sister got her to a repo vet - was told no puppies left but could see where they had been so her girl was put on antibiotics just in case of infection. My sister contacted me early this week her bitch had a swelling and was hot and panting etc etc took her to a closer vet as she was worried that she had an infection. Nope - no infection but she still has puppies and is due any day now (can't recall exactly when). Vets can't explain it. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

We saw the spines of the puppies on the ultrasound on Sunday but we couldn't see anything on the ultrsound on Monday morning, nor could the vet. It would be so nice to think her puppies were still there but even her teats have considerably decreased in size since Monday and she has lost 3 kgs in weight from when we weighed her last Wednesday to when we weighed her the following Monday when we had the second ultrasound done Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

My bitch had slowed down a lot, but I put that down to a belly full of pups, as she would still perk up when I was playing ball with the others. I noticed a greenish black discharge mid morning so took her straight to the vet. Unfortunately I got the young vet who is not as good at explaining things, and he basically said we need to x-ray / ultrasound to see what is going on, but the recommendation was to c-section her immediately and get rid of the whole litter. I definately wanted the ultrasound first before deciding to end the pregnancy. They could see pups, but no heartbeats. After that I agreed to the c-section for the safety of the bitch. Several pups were dead, some necrotic, the ones still alive were not good, and too young to be saved. My bitch was very sick for about 4-5 days before the AB's started to work. Despite blood tests, I never got an answer for why it happened. There were several scenarios: 1: Bacteria could have been introduced from the male at time of mating. 2: During the pregnancy a pup died, was not reabsorbed, therefore created the bad environment in the uterus. 3: Bacteria picked up by bitch at some stage of pregnancy. Obviously I was devastated, especially without a real answer as to why. Hopefully it will not happen again. I did some research on DOL, and discovered there were several people who experienced similar things last year. The general consensus was to get the bitch on antibiotics prior to mating and for a period of 3 weeks to eliminate #1. BTW my vet also asked if he could spey her while she was under. She was only 3 at the time. If it happens with her again I would though. As for the weight loss, my girl was different. She has never got her figure back. Our bitch was on antibiotics from the time she came into season until 2 weeks after mating. The brownish coloured discharge was red by Monday so one & a half days of the brownish colour then red and the vet said the red discharge will continue for 3 or 4 days (still there today although very little) The vet also said as long as there is a red discharge he is happy but if it turns to creamy-yellow or green to get her back to him immediately so we are watching her like a hawke.... do not want pyo He has her on antibiotics for 5 days but I am thinking I may ask him for another weeks worth. Fingers crossed for you and your girl, my sisters girl lost a bit of weight too - thats why she was so stressed when she felt the swelling etc etc and rushed her to the local vet. I guess the main thing is that your bitch is ok - that was my sisters biggest worry - loss of puppies is very hard to deal with but at least your girl is fine. You always wish you knew why, most of the time you won't and you will never know. I am very sorry that you lost this litter, I know how much you were looking forward to it.
