My old Afghan was always hurting his. Drove me nuts. I had a Belgian Shep foster who did his a couple of times in a few months as well.

Not bad enough to warrant the trauma of adult removal, but a pain in the butt for sure. My current dogs have none, and pups I breed will have them removed.

Yep, it's the 'ghans here too, the Salukis had theirs removed before they got here. I don't know how the Affs do it, but they do it!

The mutt has hers and they have been injured a couple of times. They stick out a lot.

2 of the 3 Aussies don't have theirs, the one that does hasn't ever hurt hers.

Ruby has hers but they sit close to the skin and the hair helps too I think, she's never hurt hers.

Gracie doesn't have hers.

One of Carl's front dew claws came off around 18 months ago. I haven't had them removed because it was a freak accident and didn't seem to cause him pain. His hind ones are removed. Mischa and Cleo had all of theirs taken off, and Jag has his front ones too.

I only voted for my JRT, she has injured hers a few times and I ended up getting hers surgically removed, she is horrible when it comes to trimming her nails so I figured this would solve a few problems

My Goldie has hers and has never had a problem with them

All my current dogs have theirs and although only one of the dogs have injured hers (a number of times) any future dogs I have will be getting theirs removed at the same time they are desexed.

The agony and the amount of blood that comes each time Froggy injures hers and the time it takes her to recover is something I don't think a dog should have to go through.

My sibe has hers and while she's never had an injury I caught it by accident grooming her the other day and she wasn't too happy. Hers stick out a little bit, and if she ever has to be put under for surgery again, I'll investigate having them removed at the same time.

Never had a problem with any of our dogs (including our now deceased Husky) until recently. Chopper ripped his off playing fetch. About four weeks later Angel ripped hers off playing fetch also. I wish they'd been removed when they were born/desexed.

I think it's to do with how they move, the high speed changes of direction that involve those springy pasterns to lie down on the ground and then pivot. They're giving the dewclaws much more opportunity to come into contact with the ground. At speed it's often an injury waiting to happen.

I think the Salukis will be lighter on their feet and not turning so hard and fast, turning on their toes more than their pasterns.

If I bred Affies I would take them off as babies.

My dog had his two hind ones removed two days ago - we hadn't had an injury. I choose to have them removed as they weren't fully attached (they dangled) and his actual claw seem to grow a cm overnight. it always curled under and was a pain in the butt to trim.

At the moment apart from the odd attempt to lick the wound, he seems completely un concerned by the operation. He eats, walks and bounces around as per normal.

For those interested the cost was around $280 and includes a follow up visit for change of bandage and then a further visit for removal of stitches.

He is 3.

I think we're up to injury # 5 by my reckoning on two dogs. Interested in other people's experiences.

What breed of dogs? Are the dew claws routinely trimmed? Are they close to body? Front dews only?

How were your dogs dew claws injured?

Interested..as I have had so many debates on this subject.
