feistylady
I lost my dog Matey April 2010 to Cancer and swore never another! but then I was" Lochies" official baby sitter while his dad was at work or away and sadly he had to be put to sleep 2nd Jan due to liver cancer and complications, so much cancer . However my mind is starting to sway on the "No more dogs" and Lochie was a King Charles Cavalier only 7 so I am thinking seriously although somewhat scared of having to go through this cancer thing again .I am searching for registered breeders who have online sites in SA I found a beautiful one today but would like a few options if anyone can point me in the right direction I would be very grateful. I am not ready at the moment for a pup because I want to take my time over this and their is a large possibility Lochies Dad will also be looking for a pup in a few months Please feel free to PM me if this is regarded as advertising by any replies. Thankyou
oakway
Sorry to hear of your sad loss. Do you want a = King Charles Spaniel Breeder Or are you looking for a = Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breeder. You could look for breeders of both breeds in the Dogs for sale or puppies for sale on this Forum.

Thankyou Oakway, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Breeder, yes I have been through puppies for sale here in the forum but most are interstate so I would like to try to stay in SA so it is possible to easily keep in touch with the breeder. Steve
Its best if you look for a breeder who states that they heart and eye test their adults and even better if you find one which does MRI scanning. Some have the results of these tests for their breeding animals on their websites and while its nice to see champions its much much nicer to see someone is doing the testing and eliminating anything which shouldnt be used for breeding out of the gene pool. Personally I think where the breeder is locted or how many champs they have is the least of your problems in this breed

I agree it must be fantastic for breeders to have champions and it is good to see the blood lines but as you say my main concern now looking for a new baby for me is its health and genetics. Lochie who I mentioned in my first post here had insulin dependent Diabetes from a very young age now I know this could be just one of those things but I believe as in us humans that there would have to be a possibility of a hereditary factor. He suffered badly again from rashes and then in the end this damned cancer. He had been fed everything healthy so I couldn't see a factor coming from canned dog food etc. So this is why I am very particular I notice where some breeders want you to prove you are a fit home for the puppies to go to I in turn want them to provide me with a healthy dog. Bilbo Baggins
A lot of breeders do not do MRI's because of the exorbitant cost. While Syringomilia is not unheard of in Australia it is not that common. MVD is more the concern. That said some dogs can live long and active lives with a heart murmur. Under NO CONDITION buy a Cav from a breeder who doesnt have their breeding dog's heart tested by a specialist and certificates for their eyes and they can show you their results. No Cav puppy will be registered on the MDBA Registry unless the parents have been DNA profiled, hearts eyes and MRI's mandatory.

This is why its so important to get this stuff entered on the pedigrees so people looking at trying to choose which dog to use are able to see if there is anything like these things in there over several generations and take that into account. At this time we have had to rely on word of mouth and people's honesty in order to spot immune system issues and other possible genetic issues - Its why the MDBA registry is encoraging pet owners who have dogs on limit register to enter their dogs details on the registry too so the health and genetics are able to be seen for siblings and relatives even if they are not used for breeding. This knowledge as well as the test results and health issues of the breeding dogs coupled with testing is the only way to try to eliminate or at least decrease genetic issues especially those which are not simple recessives and have no DNA test for them. Jed
fiesty lady, why not join the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breed sub forum, and ask owners from SA where they bought their dogs, and whether they are happy. There are several (at least) good ethical breeders in SA. And if you particularly want a cavalier from parents who have been scanned for syrinxes, give up now. You are very unlikely to find one. Heart scans of the parents, yet, eye tests yes - although eye problems are not endemic in this country. Be aware too, that although heart clear dogs are less likely to throw pups with MVD murmurs, it can happen. Brain scans are far too expensive and difficult for breeders to have done, and the incidence on SM in this country is too low to warrant it. And be aware that the brain scans can be totally clean and free of syrinxes, and your pup can still have syringomyelia. There are lines and kennels (the majority) in this country which have never produced SM. I think some of the people on this forum have taken altogether too much notice of Bet Hargraves!! fiestylady Lochie who I mentioned in my first post here had insulin dependent Diabetes from a very young age now I know this could be just one of those things but I believe as in us humans that there would have to be a possibility of a hereditary factor. Breeders have a duty of care to provide you with a healthy dog. It is simply a matter of finding one who takes that seriously. Was Lochie registered with SACA, and from a reputable breeder? The problems Lochie suffered - diabetes, rashes, cancer can and have all been caused by vaccinosis. Whether this is the cause in Lochie's case is unproven, but consider that, as well as the hereditary factor. Unfortunately, there is no proof either way, but I think it is worth considering. Jed
Lucky you prefer Bostons, Jaxx Buddy. 51 Cavaliers in Aust have been scanned for SM. Approximately half of those are over breeding age. That leaves about 28 breeding dogs, and if we presume they have heart clear parents, and have had eye tests, those are the only Cavaliers you would wish to purchase a pup from. As I said to feistylady - forget it. You have more chance of your Cavalier escaping and being run over and killed than you do of him having SM in Australia

I had looked for a sub forum and had missed it due to it being initialised umm is that a word? and will leave a message shortly Thankyou for that. I seriously realise that I cannot expect breeders to have undertaken a MRI and am happily finding most are having heart, eye checks and will not buy from a breeder who has not at least had these 2 checks and written proof. I think the days of this puppy has been vet checked and vaccinated stated are possibly going to lose sales. I also take an interest in the great debate over vaccinating and that is a real hot potato. Lochie had been bought from a breeder who my friend had rung when diabetes was found and told it was not in the other dogs but then is a breeder going to honestly say yes? So onward I go with my mission to find my baby to make my home once again complete.

Even the whole vaccination issue comes back to the fact that in order for the dog to react that way there has to be something wrong with its immune system and any reaction short or long term needs to be something which is recorded and bred against. mita
Feistylady, I'm sorry about your loss. Good, realistic advice there from Jed. If I were thinking of getting a Cav puppy, I'd be listening to her general advice. Best wishes in your search.
