puglvr
I'm raising a litter of premature pupies at the moment and was wondering if others had done the same and your experiences and helpful tips. They are 15 days old from birth but I would say they are actually 7-8 days old. They were delivered by c-section after mum went into labour and nothing progressed. Oxytocin bought about one dead pup and nothing else. vet decided that c-section was the way to go and was not confident that the remaining pups would be alive. 5 pups were delivered, one died after doing the stiff puppy thing the following day. one died around day at day 9 and blew up like ballon, the vet thought there was some sort of septicemia. One boy is on another mother and doing very well. The 2 girls are being hand raised at the moment and are putting on weight slowly but surely. They are starting to nurse on the bottle strongly and we are contemplating putting them with the foster mum once we have started to wean her boys which are about 2 weeks older. Mum is cleaning the babies but as she was so sick after the delivery and s-section the pups only had the colostrum off her and have effectively been hand raised since. This girl was a puppy factory rescue, heavily in whelp.

You say you think they are 7-8 days, Do you know her true due date? 5 pups were delivered, one died after doing the stiff puppy thing the following day. Hypoglycemia, did you administer any glucose/sandoz to raise it's blood sugar levels?

Cockerlover
warmth is of the upmost inportance !!do not let them chill ,check they r hydrated & if not speak with yr vet re rehydration . If mum isnt toileting them do it yourself ,after each feed with warm water & cotton wool balls . Add a little natural yogurt to thier feeds.(with aphidoficus)If they r gaining steadily continue with the formular u r using ,if not ,there is a puppy formular in leeburg site (bottol feeding babies ) Also i found human premmie baby teats better than the annimal ones . be sure to burp yr babies after each feed . Good luck ,Its hard yakka but so worth it !!

Bullbreedlover
BEEF LIVER REMEDY (USED FOR FADING PUPPIES) Large piece of Beef Liver, little bit of water, boil slowly, about 5 minutes until the blood comes out. Let cool, drain the liquid and put just 4 drops (no matter the breed) into a dropper and give to puppy. At first you give it every 2 hours for 12 hours, then every 4 hours. You can do this for however long you have to, until you feel the puppy is thriving. Don't use any of the liver itself, just the liquid. This recipe may be of help to your babies. scooby
puglvr
Glad to know I'm doing all the right things. Thanks largely to advice I have read on DOL. Sway we don't know any details about the girls apart from they were heavily pregnant. One was microchipped so we know she is 3. It was said that the girl I have is older but we actually think she is younger. We know that she has had previous litters and at least one c-section - we suspect she had trouble previously and that was the reason he intentionally got the girls in pup and sold them pregnant (because I get more money for them- his words). All the pups' placentas had seperated when they were delivered and the 2 boys were the hardest to get going- whether that was a factor- who knows, probably! They were tiny little things even for pugs, and had hairless legs and very short minimal hair on their bodies. They were very long and skeletal. I found it very hard to hold them. Yes I did supplement with glucose and beef liver tea but the little fella died anyway, but I attribute this for keeping the others alive because although the were on mum they obviously were not strong enough to feed properly. They were placed on mum every 2 hours as she was not in a very good way herself. She had plenty of milk but has now dried up. She had to have some fairly strong long lasting anti biotics they may not have been good for the babies. I started by syringe feeding them and then went onto a premmie nipple. It is amazing that such a small creature can open their mouths so wide. Thanks to my sister in law who came all the way from near Wagga Wagga to bring me the bottle and teat- actually she came down for Christmas but just happened to have what I needed.
