One Dog Missing Out

I am a bit of a sucker. I can't leave the little sad faces at home! They don't mind too much if I take one out. But take two out and I feel really guilty. I can walk all 3 on lead fairly easily but 3 at an off lead park is chaos!

Cherry is too old now at 12 to do all the things Daisy does, and Micha simply can't now with his arthritis and he can be DA so there are places I simply won't take him for his own benefit.

Micha sounds exactly like Indy. It would be easier if he was in a degree of pain that made him not want to do things but as we manage it by not letting him exert himself too much he thinks he can still do all the things he wants to - he just pays for it that night or the next day.

That's Micha all over. I could still run him over a set of jumps, or do any number of things that would be bad for his arthritis but he still loves doing, and he'd do it with gusto despite how bad it will be for him because he's still active and runs around the yard like an idiot every day.

He has been getting a bit nervy and cautious lately though, he rarely wants to go upstairs (he's not allowed upstairs due to his arthritis, but sometimes goes half way to sit on the big stairwell, which he is almost scared to do now). He is terrified of getting in the hydrobath and I suspect it's because it's slippery and therefore hurts him to stand in it. And he can't go for as long a walk as he used to be able to - you can see him tiring by the thirty minute mark :) He's not that old - he's only eight!

We have an older dog (who is slowing down) and a younger one (who is full of energy).

If it is just me then I take both to the off-leash park (when it is empty) and let them have a run around at their own pace.

If I have the help of a friend then I then take the older boy for a sedate walk around the park (at his pace) while a friend takes the younger one out for a 5/10km run.

Both dogs are used to doing things seperately ... while they don't particularly like being left home alone (because they think they are missing out on something) I find a juicy bone is enough to distract them.

I almost never take my dogs out together (I have two).

My kelpie (problem child) is dog-dog reactive and I prefer to simply concentrate on him than have to deal with two - even though the problem child is rather well behaved these days and my older girl Minty is an angel and beautifully behaved on and off the lead.

I also much prefer to take Minty out on her own becasue she is so often over shadowed by me having to deal with the problem child. Taking her out on her own means she gets to go places he cannot (due to off lead dogs) and really enjoy herself.

I stress far too much taking them out together - too busy scanning for off lead dogs in order to keep my problem child safe.

I take them out together when I have a friend/mum to help though :)

I do it quite often :)

The Sammie's go to a lot of shows and we take Lestat along with us every now and then but most of the time he stays home.

So Lestat gets taken out in the car more and goes to the park with just us but I do feel bad about it a lot of the time

Both my dogs get walked together, but one sleeps in my bedroom, the other sleeps locked in the shed! Both are allowed inside during the day but the one who sleeps in the shed usually is only in for half an hour or so as he starts destroying things or peeing everywhere! And hes the older of the two! Hes nearly 5 and still as destructive as he was as a puppy, the other one is 8 months old going on 80! It does make me feel guilty but I just can't trust my older dog! He's a turd! LOL

We have a dog that can't manage the exercise and socialisation that the other can't so it means making sure each dog does things individually as well as together sometimes.

My boy's idea of fun isn't a dog park although my girl loves the attention from humans she gets there LOL So she goes and he stays home and then he'll be taken out to do what he enjoys.

I think it's really important with multiple dogs to ensure the have time apart to be independent of one another.

But he totally understands what the leash and the car means and if Kira is involved in either of those things without him you can hear him crying from about half a K away (he has a big set of lungs and boy it's loud).

Mine is the same, he has no problems being alone, but he hates missing out on something fun! That's why I usually give him a treat as I leave... the rawhide takes him about 5-10 minutes and it keeps him happy while we walk out the door :D

Satch probably breathes a big sigh of relief: "Thank dog she took that pesky thing away for a while!"
