Just Got My First Slr!

Well, I have been researching for the past couple of months, and decided on the Canon 550D purely from seeing the amazing pics taken by fellow DOLers.

So after many phone calls to all the local places (as OH refused to buy online re: dodgy warranties :)) we headed off to Joyce Mayne to pick up my new camera.

I didn't actually leave the store with the 550 though.

After mentioning that I wanted to be able to get action shots of the dogs we were given a demo of the Sony a33. Pretty darn impressive! So after to-ing and fro-ing between the 2 models for about an hour (and stressing if we had done the right thing :)) we ended up walking out with the a33 with twin lens kit.

The Sony does 7fps as compared to the 3.7 with the 550D, so I'm keen to master that!

But I am in loooove with the panorama mode. Not too skilled at that yet, but keen to learn more.

I took a rediculous amount of photo's this arvo, just having a play, but all on auto, as I have a LOT of learning to do.

I'm just sooo excited to join the world of SLR-ers!! :)

Apologizing in advance for the photo overload... (without editing - cos I don't know how to)

I get a message saying the photos are private so you might need to check your account settings. It is possible to opload from flickr to DOL, I just can't remember how to. Hopefully someone else will see and be able to explain it to you :)

I am keen to see photos and hear what people think of the a33 and 55 as the a55 is 1 of 2 cameras I have shortlisted.

Sorry, I'll go change it! I read Possums post wrong and thought she meant 1 pic was decent and the rest were crap (was appreciating the feedback!!), not that she couldn't see them! I'm sure I've uploaded pics from flickr before, but maybe it was photobucket??

ETA: All fixed, you should be able to see them now.

Great shots...congratulations on the new camera.

I have still not upgraded. I went to Harvey Norman today to have a play with cameras as well :D

We have just been hit financially very hard....so I will have to keep on drooling over everyone elses shots.

aahhh :D Lovely! You've done well! I LOVE THIS one :dropjaw::dunce:

For those who hate clicking.. HERE is a link to the whole set

Really? I didn't think that was a particularly good one, but it was the only one that had all 4 dogs in focus, though boofhead is in the way!

Thank you for the link Pers.

Rex: Mr Interest free is my friend for the next 12 months. The Sony was a good $400+ cheaper than the Canon, plus there is a $100 cash back too, so thats certainly a bonus. Probably would have gone for the a55, but it wasn't in stock, and I wasn't walking out empty handed in case OH changed his mind.

Sonys are very good cameras. I would have gone Sony myself but they just didn't feel comfortable in my hands. So I'm a Canon girl now, nice fit for me.

You have some lovely photos, I love the one of the four dogs together the best. You will have a ball with your new camera.

Thanks guys!

Had another play this arvo and took a bazillion photo's. Gonna go see if I got any decent shots.

BTW what lenses do you Sony people use? Are there some basics that are useful for a wide range of stuff or are the kit lenses (18-55 and 55-200) enough?

As a newbie I have these two lenses....

My favorite lenses are the 50 mm & I recently bought the 85mm from states as it wasn't available here and was 1/2 price too via B&H

Gotta love that

I swop between the two :D

I would like a macro ...just not sure whether to go for the Tamron 90mm or Sony 100mm

Would love to see what the more experience Sony owners have or recommend as well ;)

Fantastic photos, I have a Sony A850 and a very expensive Zeiss lens and I would say the quality of your photos is better. What lenses came with the camera?

Don't you love digital when you can just snap away and it doesn't cost anything, have fun.

Thanks mish. :(

The kit lenses are 18-55 and 55-200. As I have never had a Dslr before I have nothing to compare them to for determining whether they are any good or not.

All my shots in the link were with the 55-200.

Lucky it doesn't cost anything to take the photo - I walked around my yard for hours taking pics of anything and everything. Amazing the things you notice with a camera in hand!

I just take photos of my boys/doggies and stuff :)

If you check out the 50mm thread you can see what this lense is capable of which is why I bought it

I loved my 55- 200 until I got the 85 ... beware you start to get lense envy :)

Glad you are having fun :D

Took the kids to the local fireworks and thought I'd take the new toy along. I think these are the best, keeping in mind camera was in one hand, and my freaked out 2 yr old was in the other hand! I looove the second shot.
