Tassie
I do have some pad wax or something like that - but have never used it. It seems if you build up the training gradually, and don't work on rough gravel or hot bitumen, then their pads harden pretty well anyway. I have been slack abouit the bike - haven't had it ouit for a few weeks - weather (too hot, too cold and/or too windy), work (darn it ), keeping head high grass under control, and obedience training have been a problem. If the weather settles down, we'll start to get out there again - and roll on Easter. Reminded of a funny story about the pad check at the ET - the day I did my 2 BCs, and a friend did hers, the club official doing the pad check was a guy who had dogs with black pads. He scared heck out of my friend at the first check when he thought the vet should look aat the dog's feet because some of the pads were partly pink. Ummmm - yes .... that's the way Border Collies come . the dogs all passed, I hasten to add.
RubyStar
10kmh is a slow jog, roughly the same as a show ring gait. Doesn't feel slow when doing it on a treadmill!!! No way I could run it And if we have to bike on grass, I'm starting to think I may not even be capable of that How is everyone else going with their training ? How many km's are you doing and how often per week ? Regarding pad care l have started using paw paw cream what is eveyone else using ? I haven't done much training, quite busy during the week with other training but I really do need to get their fitness levels up! The longest I've been out with them is about 15-20 mins at a steady pace, but probably not at the 10km/hr mark (need that bike monitor thing still or else I will never know how fast we're going!) Haven't done anything to treat their paws.

Tassie
Don't forget that you really need to be sure that the dogs (and handlers if necessary) can work at about 13kph fairly steadily - or even a bit more. Sometimes judges and pacesetters are not going to stick to 10kph all the way through. So you need to be in a situation where you don't panic if the speed goes up a bit. RS - try riding a bike on grass with about 20cm of water on it - NOT FUN!

The speed can vary up or down depending on conditions at the ground. The group may slow or halt due to the public being present, or slow on a hill and pick up pace on a downhill run. The judge may order the group, or part of the group, to speed up to catch the rest of the group if there is too much distance between competitors, and likewise may order a slow down to give more space between competitors. Be prepared for any and all weather conditions too. Especially in Melbourne. Four seasons in one day! M

I would not advise or consider jogging the course unless you are an athlete, or happen to be able to drag one along to do this for you Cycling is a much kinder option. It is (honestly) not too hard to do. M

Abbiestar
M Trust me, I couldn't jog to save myself, so is definitely NOT AN OPTION Jogging is not something I do either To start with, I can't, and secondly it is not such a good look! Cycling I CAN do, and enjoy weekly rides on my roadie of about 50-60ks. M
RallyValley
Looks like I am out for 2011 The biking was bringing up some soreness in the Kelpie, so we can go max 2km's twice a week, maybe at the rate his physio vet approves of it will be ET 2013
Flick_Mac
We've only been out twice total... I'll get back into it I promise! I do need to get a bike pump, and find a decent track around Brissie I can use that's not super busy to start with... I'm not 100% comfortable riding on the roads with the dogs yet just in case. Plus - is it legal? I think the one who needs fitness training is definitely me! While the dogs would struggle at the moment I'm DYING from 20mins or so! I also need my bike monitor fixed! Sir Sniffalot
Thanks for all the replies, we are doing 6 km's 3 times a week and walking 1km 3 times a week with a day off or two if we have a show on. Aiming for a late June/ early July ET. Training with the bike is going great except he likes to work close to me and being on the bike makes no difference a few times l have knocked him with the pedal and l am worried his little cocker ears might get caught in the spokes, this is something we need to work on. We are training on the roads around town and get a good selection of surfaces to train

It will look really funny, but will protect his ears whilst you are riding. M

Hi, did you get in touch with Ann Clarkson from the Ipswich club? She may be able to send you a map of the course so you could practice at the actual grounds where the ET will be held. Plenty of time yet. Their ET will be held July 31. M
