Abbiestar
Anyone coming to Sale to do the test? Do you know who is judging? M
Abbiestar
That's fine if they are that far from the bike, but it's best if they aren't putting any pressure on the lead. When people pass you to catch up during the ET they will pass on the right, so your dog can take up as much space to the left as the course allows. A pedometer won't get you very far for cycling-- try a cycle computer They aren't pulling on the lead so there's no pressure, just keeping as much distance as they comfortably can (at least at the moment). Thanks for that! Oh and thanks for the cycle computer tip, I'm such a cycling noob Edit: any idea where I can get a cheap one online that will just "do the job"? I don't want nor need anything fancy Best you go to a good bike shop so they can show you the features, how it works, and set it up for you. You should not need to pay more than $50.00 for a good computer. I have a $49.00 Cateye Velo on my $$$$$ carbon road bike (not used for ET's ) and it does everything I need it to. Tassie
Giant bike - mine is a Giant too - but not top of the range - really nice and light though. Dogs and I had another good ride last night - about 3.5 km for the two, then I put Kirra away in the car, and did another 4 with Rory. He is such a good boy - we saw young rabbits near the track twice, and he kept going on a verbal. My bike computer was from the bike shop - about $30 - Big W have them too. Not super duper, but do what you want for the basics.
freundhund
Okay, anyone looking for a cheap bike, gloves or any form of riding gear Aldi has a special coming up on the 17th February. Mike, I am hoping to do the Canberra ET. For me to drive out to Erskine Park it is a 90 minute drive each way, to Canberra it is a 3 hours 30 minutes. Practising at either venue is a little bit difficult, but would love to practise with someone, the Diva really needs to learn to keep going around other dogs. Gayle.
Love the Giant bikes! Mine is a hybrid, I bought it to do the ET with Benson a couple of years ago, at the same time my husband bought a cheap Kmart bike so he could ride with us on weekends. Last Christmas I replaced his cheap bike with a Giant Cypress, he absolutely loves it and says it's like switching from an old truck to a Rolls Royce. Whitka, Dusty and I are doing the Sale ET this year.

Very safe away from all traffic. It is run by a great bunch of people. Good luck with the Aldi sale! M

M It wasn't too bad when I did the ET with Benson in 09, but I believe the year before was freezing. 09 was damp, but the drizzle stopped just after the ET got underway and didn't start again until just after the presentations. I had been warned to take gloves and a warm hat as well as a thick jacket but I didn't need them.

boxagirl
You do have to hold the lead Emery- I'm just training Sibes with a bike attatchment because it's safer. ;) If you want a training partner when you get a bike (or want to borrow my old bike even- it's nothing special though) Let me know :p

It started as a bright sunny morning, but it did change. We were lucky though, no sooner had the test finished and presentations done, the heavens opened up with rain that would have made Noah build his Ark!!! I had to leave the ET shortly after presentations to get my flight back to Melbourne. Got soaked to the skin just running from the car rental depot into the airport terminal. Thank goodness for the Qantas club and a nice hot shower and clean dry clothes! M
boxagirl
Went on a 35 KM uphill bikeride today on my new Giant bike- I love it! Went dogless- Wolf is limping at the moment Yesterday took Rumour the other sibe for a bike ride on my new bike with the springer- need to fix the springer attatchment - or tighten the seat if possible- because when the dog pulled it twisted my seat :D
RubyStar
My dogs had their second bike experience tonight. Took them a slightly longer ride, but still keeping it short to start with. Was only about 10 minutes, around the block, to the park, so we had a bit of grass biking, then back home. Until they settle into it, they are jogging a head or two in front of the front wheel, is this too far? Once they get into the swing of it they are gaiting nicely next to me, but not all the time. I am going to run Ruby over as she isn't concerned about getting in the way, and ya know what, I think I need to to show her to get the hell outta the way :D
Tassie
RS They do tend to pull a bit at the start, expecially when they're inexperienced, but as long as they're settling down, that's fine. It's only if they pull consistently that most judges will warn you and eventually pull you. You may have to (very gently) nudge Ruby, if she really won't get out of the way, but if you've got a space where you can do some wide-ish left circles, she'll figure it out. Thanks Tassie. I wouldn't call it pulling, just not next to the bike. And yes, I intend to nudge her with the front wheel (ever so gently of course) to let her see first hand that it isn't a very good place to be up there Riding on grass is going to take some time, as they can't help themselves with the lovely smells and spend the grass time with nose glued to the ground, grr!!
