Me and Toby biked 3km's this evening.. I wasn't very tired but Toby is :) Will keep doing the 3km ride until he is a bit fitter. :D

well done toby! Isn't Toby the one who was frightened of bikes (or am I mixed up?) that's a very commendbale effor to for Toby if so :D

Well I emailed them. (its a walkydog) the same as a springer.

It's been 18days and I got a bloody rude message saying its been sent today.

Just the way it was worded is rude, with no communication prior..

Should be here soon..

geees!

and lucky you emailed them or maybe it would never have been sent!

Wondering if anyone wants to meet up and do some biking practise together.

The Diva gets so excited, I think I need practise at getting her used to working on the bike around other dogs. I live in inner city but could meet most places. Also Sydney Park is a good place to practise for anyone looking for somewhere off road to ride with their dog.

Also does anyone have any other training place suggestions?

I always think a good training venue is at the place where the ET is to be held. If you can get used to the area and grounds with the dog, it will be much more familiar to the dog especially. Will you go to NSW or Canberra?

Yep Toby is the one who was frightened of bikes! He will be going again this evening and went for a 2km walk this morning. :D He is still a little iffy around bikes but has come pretty far!

Well done. He is coming along well. Little by little he will get there. Try walking the bike with him to get him used to it.

  • 2 weeks later...

My girls had their first jog alongside a bike yesterday, and it went well  It was a very short one just to see how they'd go. Around the culdesac and up the street and back a couple of times. They only got ahead of me a couple of times and it wasn't by far - by the end they got into a better rhythm. But turning round the culdesac caused them to lag. Still, it was only our first ride and it went well, so lots of work to do from here!

How far away from the bike should they be gaiting? I don't mean in front or behind, I know they have to be next to it, but how wide a berth should they be giving? I used their 5' (or maybe it was 6') slip lead yesterday for their test ride, and they pretty much kept that much distance from the bike. Ruby came a bit closer by the end as she started realising it was quite amusing for me to be "up there" so she started doing a few puppy bounces with her happy smile and wiggle bum :)

Next up I need to buy a pedometer so I can actually see how fast we're going! I didn't go too fast but it was definitely a slight jog for them.

That's fine if they are that far from the bike, but it's best if they aren't putting any pressure on the lead. When people pass you to catch up during the ET they will pass on the right, so your dog can take up as much space to the left as the course allows.

A pedometer won't get you very far for cycling-- try a cycle computer

Possibly... I want to. Soaks hasn't come into season yet, so it's looking like she'll be okay to do an early July ET.

Though if I can't get there, I might just end up doing the Grafton one (10th July).

They aren't pulling on the lead so there's no pressure, just keeping as much distance as they comfortably can (at least at the moment). Thanks for that! Oh and thanks for the cycle computer tip, I'm such a cycling noob

Edit: any idea where I can get a cheap one online that will just "do the job"? I don't want nor need anything fancy

Online you can get them pretty cheap ($20-30). I got mine from here. The BR1 is $22 and will give you your speed and distance.
