~Rumour~
This is funny because I have an Aussie and get told she is most definitely a BC, not an Aussie, because she is black and white and has a tail But of course because border collies only come in black and white so any other colour must be a cross or an Aussie (i was actually suprised this person even knew Aussies existed)
geo
Great thread! It's like chinese whisper, someone says something some dumb ass believes them!! then proceeds to tell the world like they're experts! My DA staffy rescue: "oh go on let him off to play with our dogs" said the lady at the beach, "no he'll attack your dogs" i say, "oh he'll be ok off the lead" she says.. At this point I'm tempted just to prove my point.. but I don't. "it's just because he's on a lead really" she says. I walk off, all dogs still wagging tails. He does have doggy friends now and after lots of training is much better. Oh and the amount of, lock jaw comments.. unbelievable.
pebbles
I was told this piece of wisdom some years ago - Lady whose Cocker bitch had a mis-allience with who knows what "Now she has to have three cocker litters before the pups are pure Cockers again", sigh

Red Fox
Wow, SecretKei. You're brother-in-law sounds delightful. Yeah he is. The sad thing is that everyone believes him because he has "owned dogs for years". Never mind the fact that in the 11 years that I have known him dog 1 was shot, dog 2 was tethered 24/7 - he was run over a few months ago when he broke his chain, dog 3 "wouldn't go anywhere because it would stay with dog no 2" - it got run over last Christmas. I am yet to see dog 4... Yet as I have only owned my dog for 2 years I know nothing. I'm sorry but owning dogs and understanding them are as far apart as owning a brain and working as a psycologist. These people don't come to my house and on the rare occasion that they do my dog is crated in a seperate room because I simply don't trust them. They don't see my dog, how he behaves, how much work I have put in. They have no idea or understanding of basic manners, obedience training or behaviour or even simple body language. The redeeming light is my 9 year old niece (different family). She visits quite often and will watch and ask a million questions, then go home and actually DO it with her dog. If a 9 year old child can teach her dog TOT (though likely a modified version of it from watching me ) then ANYONE can. Today she was also telling me that "You know that thing you do with your dog? That heel thing? I am teaching my dog that now". Then watched her brain tick over as I explained crate training. No doubt that will be her next mission

sheree_e4
ok my favourite thing I was told by a lady who came to get her female dog after being desexed ..... Lady comes to pick up her JRT who we had just speyed and told her that there was a extra fee as the dog was pregnant, She tell me that this is not possible as her other dog would never let male dogs into her yard....... I then asked her if her other dog was a male... to which she replied yes he is a male cattle dog.... I then asked her if he was desexed and she said NO..... I still had to go on and explain to her that this is how the dog became pregnant

Oh no, no need or that, JRT is way too small to get GR pregnant. What happened 6 months later? GR gave birth to a litter of pups sired by JRT..... Bjelkier
Apparently my samoyeds will drop dead over summer if I dont clip them My bitch Alchemy is actually an Arctic Wolf and I've been lied too about her pedigree The Sammie are actually Polarbears, (honnestly how stupid do you want to get?) My oversized, totally wrong by the standard, BYB Lab is the best example of the breed someone has ever seen and I was stupid to desex him..... Oh and the very best (got this one the other day and havn't stopped laughing), apparently I'm twised for owning breeding dogs. This person told me it's like making my children have sex and it should be illegal  EDT forgot one Edited December 29, 2010 by Bjelkier
Jigsaw
If you put a dominant dog over a bitch it will calm him down!! Can't feed my dog a pig's ear as this will blood him! Um sorry what about the lizards and possums he kills? Don't teach your dog agility as it will jump over the fences. And of course the food one: sure the dog will work for you, you've got food. We have to keep the check chain on all the time, we can't control him otherwise, he'll just run out the door. If you teach your dog to tug he'll get savage. The dog's barking at you because you're doing something unhealthy, like smoking. He's just trying to protect you. We lock the dog ouside every time the grandchildren come over. Me: does he get a bone or something nice for being outside? A: no, he likes to watch through the window and make sure the kids are safe. He barks if anyone cuddles them. And yes, as mentioned before the "locked jaws" of bull breeds. Clenched jaw on my part to stop me saying anything most of the time. It's amazing how long some people have been around dogs yet how ignorant they remain. Edited December 29, 2010 by Jigsaw
Sandra777
GR gave birth to a litter of pups sired by JRT..... Or they'd NEVER do anything like that because they know they're brother and sister. Yeah right
Sayly
That Maizie is blind in her blue eye. Aussies are Coolies (farmers are the worst at this). We chopped their tails off. I once had a non dog person tell me that the only breed of dog they would consider getting would be a Husky, because they are the only breed of dog with a cat like characteristic...apparently they clean themselves the same as cats do...no surprise this person was a cat person lol Both my dogs clean themselves to some extent, moreso our Aussie. She'll also clean any other dog that she deems dirty Holly and Maizie are the same.
Nekhbet
If you put a dominant dog over a bitch it will calm him down!! if the bitch has an attitude problem and performs some hardcore wrestling moves on him it might have seen that happen
Mrs Rusty Bucket
Don't teach your dog agility as it will jump over the fences Um, true - but only when I tell her to, or there's a cat, or when we're panicking about being apart from the boss. Oops. I stupidly (we can all do it) failed to lock the door in my local favourite council rep candidate's face when I went to get some stuff printed for her. Door blew open cos nothing was holding it. Dog decided to go exploring (or check on the neighbours), jumped neighbour's fence - about 50cm high. I get back and she's not coming back for nothing. So I open my gate thinking she won't jump the fence, candidate is leaving with the stuff I had for her, my dog decides she wants to greet and gets all wiggly but won't come. So I do agility game - "WAIT" and she does, and then I get in race start stance, "GO" and straight back in over the wall fence at the front - about 70 cm high, she goes back to me. We were so surprised but I had her back at that point. Sigh. Some games/commands are clearly conditioned better than others. I really need a screen door, and I should have shut the dog out the back before going to get my stuff. Stupid stupid. At least candidate didn't give my any advice on dog handling. Skruffy n Flea
I really try not to talk to anyone about dogs as most people annoy me way too much. *nods* A black fella in NSW told me this and he seemed genuinely wary of my dog who is the biggest grovelly sook ever...He said Heelers were used and bred to herd and attack blackfellas. Sigh. I can't say it wasn't true but my dog wasn't there at the time and certainly didn't want to hurt him. She's much more tolerant than I am. apparently so in papua new guinea --- home/land owners bred and trained heeler pups extremely harshly, using locals as bait to instil hate and fear; it was brutal in the telling. i worked once with the son of a home/land owner and he recounted their dog's training over lunch one day... This is funny because I have an Aussie and get told she is most definitely a BC, not an Aussie, because she is black and white and has a tail But of course because border collies only come in black and white so any other colour must be a cross or an Aussie (i was actually suprised this person even knew Aussies existed) ditto! Now that is really nice to hear. It almost cancels out all the numbskull muppets we all have to listen to. I'm not sure. Just had the pleasure of meeting nephews "pitbull" puppy. The poor thing didn't look a day over 6 weeks old and was laying on the cement in front of a busy plaza, no leash, no collar, on it's side panting his poor little heart out (it's 36!! degreees here today!!). Never mind the risk of disease or running out into the carpark. That baby pup was in a state of distress if you ask me, could barely lift it's head (hopefully just exhausted but I don't think so). Then I get the death stare for telling him the pup is too young to be out and it's too hot. I give up. I think I'll just lock myself in the house and keep my mouth shut from now on. God, how do those that actually work with animals and no doubt deal with this stupidity day in day out hold their tongue. i'm really sorry to hear that --- reading this thread, i clicked to quote your initial post only to read on and find this further post by you... fwiw, i was going to suggest you direct that 16 yo child to educate himself by reading this site: have him click on 'dogs - dangerous breeds' in the list [that's custom's prohibited and restricted imports page] and then this page from the trading post, legally and duty bound to follow the letter of the law... i don't get into discussions with peeps about dogs and the only time that is likely to happen is at the off-leash park but i'm there to give my 2 some leg room and i prefer to keep an eye on 'em rather than stand around shooting the breeze with those folk that make it more a social event like the majority of others that frequent that park --- pisses me off when their oodle [it seems a lot of peeps own oodles in that neck of the woods] does a dump and they don't even notice...
