Im getting a working Border Collie pup shortly, and unfortunately my whistle is quite pathetic. (without my fingers in my gob)

What sort of whistle can you get, and where do you get them from.

Here's a link http://www.sheepdogs.com.au/main/page_prod...og_whistles.php I know a few people who can't whistle and use them at the trials.

There are cheaper plastic and metal versions around. Be warned, getting a consistant sound out of them is difficult. After months of trying I got to the point where I could get sound out of it everytime but trying to get it the same tone was really hard. And then when I was training and not totally relaxed it was even harder.

I know some people that just use standard dog whistles or even umpire whistles - they just use different patterns for different things.

Thanks guys.

The umpire whistle seems the easiest.

Hopefully the pup will be full of instinct and the pup will teach me more than I can teach it. Parents are apparently pretty good. They would want to be for 3800 & 4500.

Most of my work the dog should be closer than 300 m at most times. I may have to cast him out to 8 - 900 odd metres at most.

The only thing I have managed to get reliably on a whistle is a stop - a long continuous blast. Flanks are not so good, but that is handler error - I can never remember what pattern I use for what, heck remembering my words is hard enough, lol. And in all honesty the most she goes away from me is 200m or so and voice works for that. I would love to get the opportunity to develop those long long casts and increase the distance but we struggle for access to stock to trian so it kind of limits things.

all my cattle are dead quiet (research station)

So it should be a little easier for me to get the long casts.

Im getting a few sheep as grass eaters so the pup will have some nice intensive training as well..

Just waiting for the bugger to be born..
