Pedigree Certificate

Okay, i got my pedigree certificate from my breeder today and I'm not sure what I need to fill out. I remember filling a change in owner form (i retained the red copy) but there is another form on the back of the pedigree certificate. What is that for, i thought the change of owner is enough?

Do i need to submit the pedigree form back? There appears to be a cost to it as well (not sure how much)? I noticed i still have the one from my first dog too! If i submit it back, does that means i lose the copy of the pedigree certificate.

You need to submit the original signed pedigree papers to your Kennel Council, they will then issue a new set of papers in your name and yes there is a cost associated with it, which may vary from state to state. The previous owner should have signed the reverse of the pedigree papers confiming the transfer to you.

Yes they have. Does it mean anything if i return it besides getting a new certificate in my name? I've already filled in the Change of Owner to the NSW Companion Animal Register. Is that enough?

Quite frankly, i don't really care whether the certificate has my name or not, just as long as the dog ownership belongs to me. So if the only significance of returning the certificate is so it has my name, then i probably wont do it

Do you wish to exhibit or show the dog? If so, then yes the papers need to be tranferred into your name by Dogs NSW (unless your breeder is doing the showing). There is no law stating that you need to send in the paperwork and transfer the Pedigree into your name. As long as you have paperwork stating that the previous owner sold you the dog (in your case the signed pedigree papers) that's all that matters.

Nope. Its just a pet dog. I remember my first breeder saying something along the same lines... its been a while but now you mention it it seem awfully familiar.

oh forgot to mention if the pup was microchipped by breeder then you will need to transfer that ownership into your name too (some breeders like to be the 2nd contact so you may wish to speak with your breeder about that). I am second contact for my puppies, if the owner cant be contacted they will contact me.

One thing to consider in this is if the OP has bought the dog as a pet then I assume they are not a member of their states canine council eg DogsNSW, DogsSA or DogsVic. So filling out the back of the pedigree adn sending it in isn't going to do anything. In order for them to get a pedigree certificate showing them as the owner they would need to join the state canine council. Otherwise the pedigree certificate really has no value to them.

What happens if the pedigree certificate was issued in another state???. Would you send it to the issuing Kennel Council or your own state council to do the transfer???. I was asked that question the other day, not sure of the correct answer???.

I don't think you need to be a member of DogsNSW to be granted your dogs pedigree certificate. They may need to be a member once they decide to show or compete in some way.

I am sure you are right?

I have been a member, but not when I first got Atlas, and I had joined showed and left (or didnt renew that year) by the time I got Kaos, and both dogs were put into my name

The companion animal register is the microchip. That's not proof of ownership, transferring the pedigree to your name is though. So yes, definitely do it even for a pet.

So long as the microchip tag has my details and the breeder has signed the back of the pedigree certificate, i don't see any more value to transfer the pedigree to me seeing it is just a pet. If its lost, they usually track it down using the microchip anyway.

I always assumed ( Must stress ASSUMED) that you would have to be a member simply because they put your membership number on the pedigree certificate. Mind you that could also be because I am a member anyway.

I transfer all my pups over into the new owners name and the majority of them are not members, this is mainly limited register so not sure if that makes a difference.

The OP only needs to be a member to show or compete is OB/AG etc.

OP- what if in the future you are wanting to track that breeder (for another pup or some other reason) and can't find them because you lost your pedigree certificate? It might be wise to get your pedigree certificate under your name.

You can send it to the State body where you live. As for having to transfer the dog I know in Qld the rules state that it has to be transfered within 14 days of the dog changing owners and it is the responsibility of the person selling the dog to ensure it is done. You also don't need to be a member to have a dog transfered to you.

From a breeder's standpoint, do you care if the new owners transfer ownership on the pedigree or not? I was very slack about doing this for Cody, then one day remembered and felt guilty! DogsNSW were very quick about sending out a new pedigree with my details but for the fees that they charge it should have been printed in gold. The breeder had already paid to register him, putting it into the computer would only take a minute, and the paper didn't cost much.

I'm interested to find out this also. I still cannot justify the need to have it transferred over to me if all it is is a name on a piece of paper. The dog is registered under me at the council and the microchip have both my details and the breeders. It seems to me its just easy revenue for DogsNSW.
