My partner and I were expecting to get a Japanese Spitz around Jan/Feb next year, but unfortunately the mother had a miscarriage (mommy is fine though, which is the most important!) ... Our breeder then recommended us someone else and it turns out we can possibly get a new pup next week!! Really exciting and all, but at the same time very nervous since this is our very 1st puppy and we thought we would have plenty of time to research on how to properly train and also welcome him to his new home... How did you all make your new puppy feel welcome the 1st time? Did you get toys, treats... what should we get? Any pointers would be really appreciated! Thankss!! Food/water bowls Food - same type the breeder has been feeding your puppy Toys Blankets/bed Collar Leash Harness/seat belt for in the car Flea/tick/heartworm prevention Brush A good puppy school Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Ons Posted December 8, 2010 Share Posted December 8, 2010 crate, crate, crate a godsend when it comes to pups go into the training area here and read, read, read - there are specific threads on what puppies need make your breeder your new best friend, she will be able to help you with diet and any questions that you have run, not walk, into the spitz thread and ask if there are any health checks on spitzs that you should find out about before you accept the pup - I know many breeds the parents are tested for,, but have no idea about spitzes. And most of all, take a deep breath and enjoy your puppy! Take it to collect the pup, rub it on the mother and others in the litter. Take it home, it will give your pup some familiar smells Lovely breed, hope all goes well. Health wise...the most common things vets are finding with JS is patella luxation. Talk to be breeder about that Socialise them as soon as you get them, but taking the pup everywhere. Lucky they are little because you can carry them everywhere. Enrol to puppy school. Just cause they are ridiculously cute, they are very strong willed.. so prepare to be firm (there are times where I had to close my eyes and give Emmy a lecture cause she is so damn cute with her head tilts and her sweet black eyes). You have to show them who's boss. They do require a lot of training too or else they will run circles around you. They are very clever breed. They are very energetic too and fearless... well, my Emmy is, so keep in mind of that. They have to be kept busy or else they will find something to destroy... most puppies are like that though. Crate training is a MUST!!! If you have any questions.. feel free to ask When you get pics... MUST POST THEM UP!!! B-Q Posted December 9, 2010 Share Posted December 9, 2010 A crate, Quinn is the first puppy I have raised with one and I will never go without again, it made hosuetraining easier, her sleeping patterns better and she's 6 months old now and we havn't come home to find the loungeroom destroyed because she hasn't got the chance. Collar, whatever food you are going to go onto, bedding, toys (you want something that your puppy CAN chew on and play with, provising something else means its easier to teach them whats appropriate and not appropriate to play with) find a good puppy school. Socialise, socialise socialise. Quinn was my first puppy, we've always had them at home but she is the first one I've had to put in the hard yards to raise. The first few weeks were very hard with 5 hours sleep a night, lots of play sessions and frequently going outside for toilet breaks, training everything from scratch (sit, stay, lie down etc) but now she is an absolute joy, worth every second and growing into a gorgeous dog. I'm going to go over to look at her site hoping the photos of pups are there Mine was from NSW and I used Jetpets, never had issues with them.. Whereabouts are you? We've ended up using jetpets, and it's all booked in and confirmed, we are expecting our boy next Friday!!!! woohooo I've attached pictures too! Just one piece of advice- start as you intend to continue, think about what you want the puppy to be able to do as an adult and then in very small steps start actively training those things.
