Another puppy class question and I didn't want to hijack the other thread We pick up our puppy on Thursday and we have the opportunity to start at a highly recommended puppy socialisation class on Sunday. After vaccination is usually recommended but if the puppy school can vouch for a safe environment, a place where big dogs have never been, then it is invaluable. After vaccination is usually recommended but if the puppy school can vouch for a safe environment, a place where big dogs have never been, then it is invaluable. My girl loved it, and got an enormous dose of good temperament from it. Seeing many puppy schools are held at vets - how can you vouch for a place where big dogs have never been? Provided your pup has had the initial vaccination you will find that most vets now recommend that the social development of the pup is outweighed by any risk of infections. Personally I feel vet practices are the worst place to hold a puppy school as they have sick dogs being brought in everyday as well as dogs who are not vaccinated. Even if vets say they sterilise the area - this would require washing the entire space and removing all chairs, books etc. Mopping the floor does not remove airbourne or any saliva that might have sprayed onto walls etc. So don't get yourself too worried about infection. Hi alpha bet It's not at a vet surgery. I don't really like the idea of those classes. I'm not really worried about infection, realistically if it was a huge concern for me I wouldn't be doing puppy classes (as in if I didn't think my puppy would be safe I wouldn't be taking her). I am confident that the right precautions etc are being taken at the puppy school. The earlier you can socialize your pup the better, they are pretty resilient at that age and love to learn they are like little sponges. Have fun with your pup. Carolyn is very good at monitoring puppies and will be quick to tell you to have your quiet time with pup if he/she is getting overwhelmed or the training part is too advanced for the pup's age. It was great for her to see other puppies in a controlled environment as she was prob missing her mum and brothers. Though, the first class was when she was naughtiest! the trainer even said that we would have our hands full with her. This turned out to be not the case, she has turned into a really calm dog, far more laid back than her brothers and other labs. She was much calmer in the following classes as well. I noticed you are in WA, too, would you mind doing me a huge favour and sending me a pm of the details of the puppy school you have found. Our little boy doesn't come home until mid-January but I want to get onto this as soon as 'cuz no doubt most places will close down over Christmas and New Years, then with all the back to school chaos, he'll be here quickly.
