OSoSwift
Hmmm okay, So chalking my dogs white parts so they look white not pink is against the rules????????? Even though I am not changing the colour or trying to hide anything????
Tralee
PM, Fido's is fine, a lot of people use it and if it works for you I'd stick with it. A lot of people do the feet over twice. So, wash the dog including feet, but then wash the feet specifically again as well.I think the spirit of that regulation is that the product should not be used in an attempt to deceive the judge. Getting red dirt out of a dog's feet is not attempting to deceive the judge. The reg is designed to stop people doing things like blacking up a butterfly nose or dying in a desirable coat colour. does the effect of the whitener still remain if you then wash with a different shampoo for the second wash. just curious as i'd like to use it on his neck but also use the long coat shampoo for the second rinse but didn't know if that'd make the first wash pointless. SSM makes a good point. But the spirit of the law is not often interpreted and a fundamental reading of it can be applied to curb contention. Personally, I wouldn't go anywhere near a royal with anything other than my dog, specks of yellow or orange notwithstanding, as is the breeds' want. IMO a dog needs more than a coat with bright white parts to "stand out".
poodlefan
i found this in the CCCQ rules bookA person shall be deemed guilty of an offence against these Rules if he exhibits a dog in the following circumstances: n. if any dye, colouring, lightening or darkening matter has been used and remains on any part of the dog at the time of exhibition: from that i'd say the whitener would be fine since it is not a dye or bleach and does not remain on the dog. Really it just makes the hair very clean and bright. not permanently altering the coat. White enhancing shampoos do not "dye, colour, lighten or darken" coat. The purple masks any yellowing but it is hardly colour enhancement. Nor does it disguise or change coat colour. You are in effect only cleaning what is already white. I like the Chris Christensen White on White for enhancing white. PM Diva and Aloysha and see what they use - best products can be quite breed specific. For removing dirt from white feet and legs, I use soap first (Sunlight) and follow with shampoo. Massage the soap in well (till its very foamy) rinse and shampoo. Works a treat. Jsk
whitener: Fidos whiten and brightener - on the white areas that tend to sop up the red mud. I could check, but I seem to recall that that is not allowed. Using whitening shampoos is joy dying or altering the fogs coat colour and is perfectly within the rules. On my basenji's I use Equinade showsilk Glo White shampoo. It brings them up looking lovely, I have even had people ask me if I have chalked them because they are so white. I will use potato flour on day 2 of a show if they have gotten dirty, if they have stayed clean then I don't see the point.
whippets
I use livamol products (horse products) and sometimes equinade. For smelling good on show day I use Isle of Dogs spray.
RoxyNHemi
I wash out my shampoo, the effect of the shampoo remains. Nothing wrong with that. Sure, not technically. But the brighteners in laundry detergents are fluorescents. That's what make your clothers look bright and white. The fluorescents remain on the fibres. It's very hard to 'police' unless it is 'flaming' obvious. And ppl still chalk as though ignorance is bliss. Chalking can be a method of cleaning a dog - such as a Westie, you are not supposed to wash the dogs, as you can strip the coat of natural oils and cause skin issues, therefore chalking is the method of cleaning them.. benshiva
I absolutely chalk my dog's whites before I go in the ring. I can't stand dirty looking dogs and have NEVER in the last 13 years of exhibiting been pulled up for doing so. What I have received though is a lot of compliments for my lovely clean/white dogs Oh and I use Plush Puppy Herbal Whitening shampoo Cherry Knoll Chalk Helper Chalk Powder for legs Block chalk for noses. Tralee
I might start selling sunglasses when my dogs are showing. The "Gleaming White" Coat Maremmas. But then, I could have sold raincoats at the Sydney Olympics, too

Okay for a complete novice like myself, what is chalk helper and can you just use chalk by it's self and what would you do with fairly hairless Whippet legs??? I use PP Whitening shampoo as well. Chalk Helper is a product which helps hold the loose chalk in the dog's legs. I put the Chalk Helper on then powder the legs and brush the excess back out. When I was showing my Whippy girl, I used block chalk on her legs. I just rubbed it on and brushed the excess out with a soft brush. I used to use the PP Whitening shampoo on her as well. She is a fawn and white and very gorgeous I am a little biased though LOL

Of course, I could twist the rules and say: "Yeah but; yeah but." I have shown white dogs all my life & with a good wash regime my dogs are shown in sparkling white condition White dogs come in varying shades & qualities & they way the colour looks to the eyes also varies greatly & it doesn't mean it has been washed in a blue shampoo. Many breeds have very bright whites naturally so i hope you aren't saying if its too bright it is enhanced because that is one big call??

I have used block chalk on a black dog before to help a couple of very bald patches not show up so much. Will get some block chalk and have a play I think. Of course your girl is gorgeous, she's a Whippet!! ETA - What about lower chests/tummies?? Lewis has white part way up his rib cage and it is rather pink and dotty, would you use block chalk for that as well??? I can post a pic if it would help. Oso, the Ring 5 spray chalk is awesome on Whippy legs! Fawn and white Whippets are I prefer to show my boy without the pee stain he gets on one leg being visible - hardly cheating IMO. Yes I'd forgotten about Spray Chalk!! That's a good one too. I'd chalk any white part that had pink showing through. I don't see it as cheating either. I just like to present my dogs to the very best of my ability. If it means chalking them a little

How do you go not getting the spray chalk where it shouldn't be??? IE I want some on his pink tummy bits, but need to keep it away from the brindle bits??? Do you go close and then use say a sponge to go up to the edge of the colour? It sounds good for his legs, but not sure about near the margins where the colour is (osrry probably sounds dumb but I am having trouble envisiging it as I have never seen the spray chalk)

poodlefan
What about the CC White Creme Cover up ?????? IS that entirely different to chalk?????DO you apply Chalk with a small damp spounge??? CAn you tell my last dog was black! The cover up creme is a very thick creme - I use a touch on Howie's nose but its too thick for large area coverage over fine hair. When I use block chalk I apply it directly to the dog (haven't used a pre-chalking creme to date) and then lightly brush it into the coat with a goats hair brush. I way prefer the spray - quicker, good coverage and once dry, it stays put. How do you go not getting the spray chalk where it shouldn't be??? I aim carefully and brush it out of any areas it shouldn't be before it dries. Howie has four white legs so my aim doesn't have to be very good. I don't use it anywhere else. Have the dog on a towel for doing feets or you end up with little Whippet rock art paintings on your trolley top.
