Cut Pad

Anyone got any good ideas about dressing/treating a cut pad?

Last night some time between 6pm and midnight Moss somehow cut a thin slice of about 1cm diameter of his front main pad. It's sore (of course) and he's mainly resting, staying off it. I have no idea how he cut it, but I suspect it's a speed demon type injury - perhaps chasing birds went wrong...

Anyone had any success with treating injured pads?

What did you bathe it in?

This is not highly serious, it's just a flesh wound, but it's in an awkward spot to treat and I wondered what others have done in the past.

This has happened several times to Hope and really you don't need to do anything - 'pad' skin heals really quickly on it's own.

The first time it happened I washed her foot each time she came inside to get any dirt off, but by the next day it had a tough scab and she was walking normally on it the day after. The next several times I just checked the wound regularly and it healed in no time.

Just keep an eye out that he doesn't lick it too much...

Don't worry, it is common for dogs to cut the pad - Often find dogs with various problems with the pads - sometimes just a slice or even a big chunk it just takes time to heal on its own - can happen from the wire on the pens or even a stick in the paddock. Don't bandage his foot and it doesnt really need to be kept clean - after all he just walks in dirt again. Usually takes between 10 days or for bad ones about 3 weeks before everything back to normal.

Mmm, that's what I thought. It's a fairly self-limiting injury in that he's decided to rest, rather than hoon around like usual. :cheer:

It's open and raw tonight, but seems clean enough. He's not paying it too much attention. Maybe he remembers that I have an eliz-collar in the cupboard!!

I'd be inclined to give it a bath in Calendula Tea perhaps once a day/night (or in between times, if I thought necessary), just to help clear any germs away after a day of being out and about. It has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory qualities.

Either that or paint it with Betadine. Personally, I generally prefer the Calendula Tea.
