Folic Acid

I was wondering do many breeders give their mated bitches folic acid up until they have their puppies.

I was told by my vet to try folic acid with a particular bitch as she had a puppy with cleft palate and he said the folic acid could help next time...

So would like to know breeders experience with folic acid and what the doseage would be.

For humans is one tablet a day so I would say the same for a dog. Need to start about 1 month before you think she could come on heat. Does not matter if she gets more than a months worth.

ETA God I wish I could spell. :o

Thanks my vet told me to start her as soon as she is mated... he got that wrong!!!!

She is in season now, might not get the result especially taht she hasn't been on them a month before season

It is the same as with women trying to concieve and as a preventative for Spina Bifida. Once early development has taken place at the cellular level nothing can be done to avoid a congenital defect.

Therefore best to have bitch already on folate before conception.

I had one puppy with a cleft palate in my recent litter and will be making sure all future bitches being mated receive folate.

Start now better than nothing.

Thanks have started her today!! My vet said cleft palate could have been environmental thing but you just don't know.. So would rather try folic acid this time.

Are there any foods that naturally contain folate?

And human folate tablets are fine? What about the dose for a toy dog (2.5kg)?

I would grind/break them up and give about 1/4 a day

Mine is a small dog weighs 3kg and gave her 1 whole tablet... There were a few brands at my chemist so asked the difference and there was one they sell behind the counter that does same job and much cheaper cost me $3.40 it's only small tablet so thought 1 tablet wont hurt her...

For something to dogs WOULD eat - beef liver.

Coconut water (not milk) also contains folic. It has even been considered as medium for canine IVF of viable Oocyst impant.
