Retrieving & Field Training Talk

Hey, mollipop, I'm trying to work out a design for one for the black and white brat. If it was in a bag she may (just may) heel up to the control point for me. Will let you know if I am successful or will bring a completed one for you to scrutinise at the next trial.

For those who don't know me, we trialled for the first time this weekend - 3 trials, 9 runs and she completed them all. Not really well but at least she completed them. She managed a second place on Sunday so I am just so happy with her. She has only had 1 training day this year so it's all natural ability at this stage. So ............... wondering now if I will ruin her if I train her a bit more

Does anyone know where I could buy a bird bag (on a belt to put around my waist)?

I trialled in Restricted for 3 days over the weekend. No qualies but improved each day and learned a lot.

Hi Mollipop, Scouts mum makes them I will pm you her email. GSPx3 let me know if you want it aswell? So excited about the B&W brats 2nd place!!

Anyone know of anyone in WA that sell/make game bags?

You should be able to get a shooting vest with a game pocket in the back at almost any gun shop - either in person or on line

The pocket is like a pouch and will hold lots of game - rabbits, pidgeons etc and is easy to access.

Thanks, JRG, but I'm really after a game bag :) Not urgent obviously, I haven't even trialled yet and it will probably be a future dog that will see me attempt Restricted, not my current test guinea pig laugh.gif Poor Ruby laugh.gif

do you mean like a satchel with a net front?

You could contact John at <www.sportingoutbacksupplies.com.au> as he is a gundog man.

We have our first RATG on the weekend, starting too get nervous :o

Never entered anything like this before.....my main concern is her not looking ahead and marking the fall as we haven't had much of a chance to practise with someone throwing. So should be interesting :)

Shouldn't be too bad, I am entered in a double obedience trial the same day so will be running back and forth  Hopefully my nerves will be well and truly gone by the end!

Oh gosh I could never do 3 trials in one day lol.

My dog had not had a lot Of practice with the thrower and he totally missed the second mark

Best of luck, TO!! Just curious, where is your RATG being held? Is it on an oval with the obedience, or in a bit of scrub?

Our second RATG is on the 20th May. Unfortunately, I think that is all we have scheduled this year. So no RATG titles for WA folk this year  But I'm enjoying them and will enter when we are lucky enough to have one :)

Hi,

I need a bit of advice from ppl who are familiar with field trials, retrieving work.

Ive got a Brittany pup that Im planning on showing, obedience trialling. Im not sure if I want to give the retrieving side of things a go, obedience titles are my main goal, but Im unsure about the use of tug games with hhim as a reward/ play. Ive heard that its not wise to use tug games with the gun dogs if you want to use them as a gun dog (my husband does have a bit of a dream of taking Obi out hunting one day).I dont want to start tug if it will hurt him chances in these type of trials if I do want to give them a go one day?

What do you use as a play reward/ motivator if not tugging, he seems to love it but Ive delibrately not done any just in case.

I think theres a few retrieving ppl here who have gone through the obedience rings before field work so is it relativly easy to transition to a whistle? and also is there stuff I can do to encourage his natural hunting instinct while still doing my obedience work? Im sure there is a way I can have him capable of performing both in the obedience ring and then on to field work? Or is it really tough? I know he would enjoy getting out in the paddocks eventually

Whilst my girl will tug (and still has a very soft mouth) she doesn't enjoy it very much so I don't use it much at all. She would much rather chase a ball, receive a piece of food or even just have a bit of a cuddle.

We do obedience. rally, RATG, agility and retrieving so she is an all round dog.
