Puppy Not Walking

My last dog (not Jager) hated the leash when we got him. He was about 10 weeks when we bought him home and we would do training around the house as we couldnt take him out until he was fully vacc'd.

As soon as we put a leash on him he wouldn't move. Plant his bum on the ground and no amount of coaxing with treats or toys would him to move.

So what we did was get a knee high stocking and tied it to the ring on his collar and then played with him as usual or sat and watched tv with him. Didnt try and train him at all. We would leave it on for however long we were with him for (never left it on unsupervised). Next time did the same thing. Eventually he got used to it. Then we would pick the end up and let it fall on his back or feet etc so he would get used to a little bit of pressure. Once use to that we put a longer bit of stocking on so that it would actually drag on the ground. Again once he was used to it, we would move the stocking around so that he got used to moving pressure. From there we would hold onto it while he moved around. Eventually worked up to the actual lead dragging on the ground and then picking the lead up for a few seconds and then holding it while he moved around.

Once we allowed him to get used to the pressure gradually he didnt have any problems.

quick update guys,

he now walks (with little fuss)

things i have done to achieve this. all what was mentioned before.

main things thats did help with the training was,

new car harness/leash to indentfy this was he walking leash.

walks in back yard with throwing treats on the ground to lure him and increasing the distance etc

then moved onto heading towards the front yard doing the same thing, ie back yard to back gate, back yard to outside of back gate, back yard to driveway, backyard to letter box etc and increase to other houses within the street.

now so far i have successfully walked him around the block twice with no treats. approx walking time of 15-20mins. (he gets one treat when we return home though)

however, he is still little bit nervous when a car is passing by. when a car passes, he is really scared. stops and wont move. a quick 2 tugs on the leash after the car has gone and he knows to keep walking. also the first initial start of a walk he needs a few tugs to get going. only 3 houses worth roughly 2 tugs per house to get him going (excluding when a car passes by).

after time i am guessing he wont be as scared with cars as ill be taking him on the same route for sometime to get his confedence up, then ill move onto creating a new route.

oh few more things. he has learnt not to enter the house period when the door is (always) left open and now can go to the front yard without running away or going physco. so i can leave the gate open and he will follow me to check the mail and return. at no stage he disobeys.

rocket is our first canine with my gf and i. i wanted a rotty or a gsd. but she complained they were too big. so we compromised. after 7mths of weekly visits to the rspca we fell in love with rocket.

i have had a ridgeback x and a staffy x previously (when i was younger) and they didnt need to be trained on a leash. just attach and go

with rocket, i found this weird as he wouldnt walk so i googled my way onto this forum.

corvus- i cant walk too fast for him as i cant even take 1step.

dyzney- i went through my rspca papers and his birth date is 27 aug 2010.

quick update....

i had a friend over who had her puppy that walked on a leash... they played and got to know each other....

got her to walk her dog outside just before she left home and i got rocket to follow her. which he did. no treats. as long as he seen her dog, he wanted to follow. still bit scared when a car drives past though.

on the way back, i made sure rocket was ahead of the other dog so he was no longer the follower. and guess what? he walked, then i got he to jog next to me on the way home. (80-100m each way)

when her dog left, he kept pulling on the leash trying to chase after the puppy. will try tomorrow solo and see how he goes.

rocket is still walking!

thought him some lil more things. when i stop walking, he automatically sits and waits for my command.

also, i have thought him to walk without a leash. he walks approx by my side up to 2m ahead worse case scenario (he constantly turns back to see where i am going). if i stop, he will automatically sit and wait for a command. but, once we get close to home, he speeds up (up to 3m). by the time i call him, he turns around and sees me not walking, he will automatically sit.... in the middle of the road! haha!

also, i have thought him to walk without a leash. he walks approx by my side up to 2m ahead worse case scenario (he constantly turns back to see where i am going). if i stop, he will automatically sit and wait for a command. but, once we get close to home, he speeds up (up to 3m). by the time i call him, he turns around and sees me not walking, he will automatically sit.... in the middle of the road! haha!

Please - Please - keep this pup on lead. He is much too young and inexperienced to be allowed off lead or he WILL be a dead dog.

A daughters 17 yo friend was walking their beautiful 8 month old Border Collie pup last week - only had him for 2 weeks. He chased a car and she lost her grip (obviously not a good grip) and let him go - he was dead within seconds.

It doesn't take much and happens very quickly.

Hi - as Andisa has mentioned, please be careful. Off-lead walking should only be done if the dog has 100% recall. With breeds like border collies and Kelpies, they can get VERY excited and stimulated by cars and can chase them - frequently leading to very tragic consequences. It really would be a good idea to wait until Rocket's a bit older and more 'stable' before you take him off lead walking on the road... Please don't take the advice the wrong way, it's just that it's always tragic when an accident happens and even more tragic if it could be avoided. Kelpies sometimes try to 'herd' the cars and will run and run ...

hmm ok. but rocket doesnt chase cars. when a car passes by, he takes a few steps closer inland and stops immediately. he is still scared of cars. once they have passed, he continues to walk.

he hates cars period, if a car is parked on the side of the road, he will walk away/around/walk distant from it - i dont get it.

Have to agree with the others. Please keep little unpredictable one on the lead when there is any chance of danger right now. Just say a cat runs past and it's IRRESISTABLE to your little one. Plenty of time for serious training, and high expectations. You enjoy your baby!

Have you tried the method of you walking backwards with the dog infront of you, once the dog is walking you go back to it's side and repeat where neccessary.

nope. will give it a shot though. that vid was after 2-4mins worth of instruction. he picked it up quicker than i thought.
