New puppy
Hi all. At a bit of a loss. Poor Baxter was desexed on friday and while his health is ok he's totally frustrated wearing his cone. He is biting a bit and generally won't settle down. He also seems to not like me?! He has to wear it for 7 more days and just wondering how to help him through the next week... Any thoughts? Bundyburger
You can either take it off and just have it on when he's unsupervised, or he's just going to have to put up with it for another week. Our pup lasted 4 daya before he broke his Then we just had bitterant on his stitches so he wouldn't lick it.
Kirty
Take it off. Most dogs aren't bothered by their stitches anyway. If he starts to chew at them, put it back on.
WreckitWhippet
i've never used one and haven't had a dog or bitch chew stitches yet
whiskedaway
My girl never had a cone and she didn't touch her stitches at all. The one time she looked like she was going to, a sharp "No" stopped her in her tracks.
New puppy
The vet put the fear in me that if he chews his stitches it'll be another big op to fix it. Its breaking my heart watching him so upset tho so am going to try some supervised cone free time. Surely 10 days is a bit over the top?
WreckitWhippet
For me it's over kill. If the pup shows no interest in them, then leave the collar off while you are there to supervise and put it on if you go out and have doubts.

We never send them home with cones however if one decides to lick and chew excessively they can have one. Pretty uncommon though!
Clastic
If the pup shows no interest in them, then leave the collar off while you are there to supervise and put it on if you go out and have doubts. Agreed. If he's not bothered or even notices there are stitches then just leave it off. My boy had to have the cone on but that was only because he was licking and wouldn't stop. Once the wound had pretty much healed and scabbed up and Mars wasn't taking any interest in it, I took it off.
Elsha_UK_AU
My Pup had those stitches and umbilical hernia stitches and my vet told me not to worry about a cone. He said it would probably annoy the pup more than the stitches and he was right. Besides an initial sniff of the area and the odd lick, he didn't bother his stitches at all. None of my Dogs have ever worn a cone when they've been desexed. I'd be taking it off him when he is around you and see how he goes.....you can always put it back on if he looks like he's going to fixate on the stitches. New puppy
Cone is off and he's not showing any interest in the stitches. They're internal stitches too. I may leave the cone on when he's by himself just in case. Worse of all is he's a small pup with long nose so had to get the larger cone which means poor dog is bumping into things and unable to pick up anything. Oh and I had to scratch behind his ear for him
mackenzie11
i totally agree with the no cone responses, mollie got desexed a few weeks back, when she first came home she started licking her stitches, so i went back to the vet and got a collar, she only had it on for about 1 min, cause she could not walk with it on and bumped into everything when she tried to walk, she was very frightened with it on, so i took it off. she did try to lick her stiches and i gave her a firm NO, and that worked, only had to rouse on her a few times the first day home and she got the message not to do it good luck
W Sibs
I've never had to use the cone either for my 2. Charlie never licked his stitches and Emmy didn't even realise she had stitches!
Staranais
I'd only put the collar on him when he's unsupervised (and if he's not bothering his stitches at all then, you could probably risk not putting it on at all). Most dogs don't bother their stitches - on the other hand, you get dogs like my malinois who first ate out her stitches, then immediately ate out the steel staples we replaced them with... Nushie
We didnt use a cone when Jager was desexed. I would take it off and only put it on if he shows signs of wanting to get to them.
