Dju
PATCH the spaniel got more than he bargained for when he jumped up and grabbed a kebab from the edge of the family barbecue. The Swords family, of Roseville, thought he had pinched a sausage, reports the North Shore Times. They didn’t realise he’d gulped down the chicken kebab - and its 15cm metal skewer. Three weeks later, when the 13-year-old cavalier king charles spaniel was sick, they took him to the vet. “They did some blood tests and he went on antibiotics for a problem with his liver,” Rosemary Swords said. When the problem didn’t go away the vet did an X-Ray.” This revealed the skewer - and a check of the Swords’ kitchen utensils proved one used on the barbecue was missing. The skewer, swallowed blunt end first, had pierced Patch’s oesophagus, ribcage and shoulder. Joe Daley, of The Ark Veterinary Hospital, said Patch needed 80 stitches after the skewer was removed, and was lucky to be alive.
Loving my Oldies
Without wanting to sound too unsympathetic for poor little Patch, I have to say that his family seems to be very appropriately named

mac'ella
there was something similar a few years ago where a dog had an abcess that contained a wooden skewer which had been swallowed and had actually woked its way out of the stomach and up out through the rib cage, since I saw that I make sure the skewers are kept separate, break the tip off snap them in pieces and straight in the bin away from the dogs.
