I don't watch the show that often but do admit to feeling frustrated when I do.

The last one I saw had a DDB with severe hip dysplasia having a hip replacement. Fantastic opportunity to talk about hip scores of parents, registered breeders, advice for how to avoid hip dysplasia but none of this was mentioned at all.

A prime opportunity to educate completely wasted. :D

Sorry if this has been mentioned before, the episode was on a few weeks ago.

He gets it in the neck here because of his looks

Not from me :D

He makes the old girls wet their pants.

Not this one

The show is not an instruction manual on "how to be a vet" or "Veterinary Procedures for the Homeowner". It's a show, entertainment - the show features a couple of blondes dealing with animal illnesses. And it's about entertainment - if you fnd it objectionable, don't watch. He dealt with the chi as he did because it is entertaining - as the snake in the pool was also entertaining.

Hairless roos are almost impossible to rear. I am quite sure Chris knew that...... but it gave him the opportunity to warn intending rearers about cows' milk which is one of the major causes of roos found by the "public" dying. By the time they are taken to a vet/carer because they wont drink the cows milk, the damage has been done. It also allowed people who had never seen a baby roo (most of the population) to see one.

I didn't think much of the comment about the dog with the congenital problem being "inbred" but the specialist said that - and it showed people this problem which is relatively rare. Chris paid for the specialist surgery.

For the past 15 - 20 years, only those who rate in the top 2% academically may enter vet school, which explains why the minority of graduands began vet school after Yr 12. He was in that 2% which makes him a lot smarter than the other 98%. So I don'r think he is stupid. Also, most vets don't get rich, unless they have their own TV show --- so exactly how dumb is he?

Not at all.

I'd rather watch him on TV being a showman than some shuffling old toothless horror with halitosis and a green cardi who mumbles his way through 100% correct (and dead boring) diagnoses and treatments.

Give me entertainment any time over boring as bat excrement. And if it is entertainment which offers a few tiips, so much the better. I watched Big Brother a few times, and learned nothing. :D

If I want correct and relevant diagnoses and treatments, I'll go to my own vet and pay for it. Not expect to get it from the TV.

I like the show. It's TV entertainment. So it doesn't present each case as if it were being played out in a post-graduate vet practice program.

Each case is little more than a summary, without a lot of detail. I'm not surprised to hear that Chris, the male vet, originally graduated with honours. He's got attributes of someone with the brains to do that. He also seems to have genuinely warm social skills. Whatever he looks like.

Hell...he loves animals - that puts him miles ahead of one vet i knew who appeared to hate them! Personally i like him, have no real issues with his show - it's it's just that...a show. I've not gotten cranky at an episode yet...but i had to stop watching some of the RSPCA ones...lol.

And he can treat me or my critters anytime! :)

Jed, articulate and rational as usual! Like you say, it's a tv show - I can't believe people are complaining SOOO much about tv producers and presenters trying to make entertaining tv... um what do you think their job is?

You're talking about a half hour, prime time, commercial channel tv show... where does it ever claim to be the source of all truth on everything? The show provides some good information, with exposure to millions of people, that's much more than I've done, at least. Like Jed says, if you don't like it, don't watch it.

The Chi last week may have been revved up, but I would place blame for that squarely on the owners, not the vet or the show. If you watched it, you would have seen the owners laughing, not helping at all and finding it all quite amusing that the Chi was so worked up about taking a pill (well at least the male owner). There is absolutely no way I would a) allow my dog to be worked up to worse behaviour than usual for a tv show or b) to react to a vet, or anyone else, like that, without serious intervention from me. So I do blame the owners.

I'm sure many a vet has to deal with badly behaved pets and owners who don't do anything about it. How many owners would complain if a vet physically restrained their pet when they found their pet's behaviour simply amusing?

And, the trip to Fiji (not Bali) was quite clearly in the interests of helping the people and animals of the country - as well as making good tv, and raising awareness. They said there is only ONE qualified vet in the whole of Fiji, so with Chris, Lisa and Chris's dad, they added three more, for a short time at least. They did a lot of surgeries, including desexing, and explaining to the locals what the benefits of desexing are, to try and avoid more random litters. The locals seemed quite receptive, and concerned about the best interests of their animals. Without the show, they had no chance of seeing a vet at all.

They may have had the odd surf, but seriously, do you work 24 hours per day, every day? Why shouldn't they have some time out, and support Fiji tourism on Australian tv at the same time??

Stop being so negative everyone!!

Some of the stuff on the show is pretty bad and I agree they put entertainment before common sense. Actually i saw something worse on that show keeping up with the jones'. The redneck bloke ran over a snake a couple of times in his harvester. The snake was clearly f***ed! But instead of just shooting it they kept it overnight on concrete in some kind of cattle yard. So they basically just let the snake be in pain for hours so they could have a story for their show.

sadly today so many top class students have amazinly little animal knowledge, they get the academic learning but as my vet likes to say, all they have at graduation is a licence to learn at the pet owners expense.

he had a young guy in to help once and i couldnt belive some of the things that came out of him.

for example all dogs that are sensitive to ivermection should die.

ie dose all collies and the ones that dont die are then left to continue the breed.

so i asked him so you would advocate a murry grey breeder worm their cattle with Ivemec and then he wouldonly have left cattle that were not sensative to it?

he said yes, thats what should be done.

considering one herd it killed the lot, thats how it was discovered that there is a sensativy issue with some animals and breeds.

thats pretty heavy culling?

then chris had a lady bring him a small puppy from the pound for a DNA test. she said she didnt want the puppy if he had pit bull in him, chris alluded to pit bulls not being good for families with small children. the results came back staffy x whippet. what he failed to mention is that there is no DNA sample for the american pit bull in australia so all pittys come up as staffys since their DNA is so similar.

I remember that episode. What a twit of a woman!

Stop being so negative everyone!!

Why? People say - gee I hated such and such a movie or an ad for the following reasons. Why on earth cant they say they cant stand a tv show?

Sure, I agree, but there is a lot of criticism of this show from a lot of Dolers out there and I repeat, if you don't like the show, then don't watch it. It's out there for entertainment for the people who don't have the knowledge that most of the members here have. It's out there to make money from advertisers for the TV station and that's called running a business. Obviously this show is a hit with a large majority of viewers otherwise it would have been scrapped a long time ago. I watch it purely because I love animal shows. I don't always agree with what is being shown but I don't bitch about it. I take it as another show I watched while having a relaxing evening. If it 'offends' then use the remote and change the channel or just get up and leave the room. There is always an answer.

Exactly.

I'm sure if it was a TV show about breeding dogs which portrayed breeding in a completely unrealistic way, there would be a lot of negativity.

I will complain because it's my industry and a false representation of how things actually happen. Yes, most of us here probably know better, but a lot of people out there don't .

I watched it to see why Dolers always criticise it and there was nothing else on last week.

Sure it's a money making business as movies are - wont stop me from saying - I watched the doco on purebred dogs after seeing a thread here and thought it was crap. It's not like viewers who dont own dogs and arent members of Dogzonline are going to be any the wiser by a thread on here anyway. It's like the gardeners program - people here watched it because it was a train wreck.

Infact I think I will watch it again next week if I remember. 2 reasons

1. I like to perve at him with his shirt off

2. It's great to be in a thread with so many like minded people who can shoot holes right through the show :)

It's not important enough for me to stick it on my calendar.

And I know there are others who dont agree with me and think the shows is great. Good on them  . I watched a new Australian film the other night and thought it was absolutely brilliant. There are more people on the internet movie data base forums who think it's garbage. No big deal to me. I dont take it personally - not sure why people who like the show and love Dr Chris are getting their knickers in a twist that a lot of people here are saying the show is unrealistic. If you watch the film critics on The Movie Shw say your fave film is garbage, is that going to upset you?

Well it's good you can banter about it without getting upset then. Good for you. It's interesting to discuss likes and dislikes without getting grumpy, isnt it. A few people did say, however, if you dont like the show, dont watch it. Well I could say, everytime there is a thread about Bondi Vet people discuss what they dont like about it on this forum, so if you dont want to see negative comments, dont read the thread. That would be pretty unfair of me, dont you think?
