Janba
This is ridiculous especially for back dew claws which aren't even properly attached and do cause problems with being injured later in life. I have never seen pup react badly to removing of dew claws. I do believe in leaving front dew claws for working and active dogs as they do use them for turning etc
The Ark
Did Victorian breeders know it is illegal to do your own dew claws? Does that mean you can get a friend to do them then, if you can't do your own? We had a friend do our Aussie pups and had no problems at all. I have since bought one pup (from Victoria actually) who still has her front dew claws and I curse them every time I groom her for a show!!!! Years ago when I had Shih Tzus a groomer cut one of my bitches dew claws of when clipping her. It was a mess and extremely painful and traumatic for the dog. SwaY
http://new.dpi.vic.gov.au/__data/assets/pd...37/Dog-code.pdfNumber 11. Thanks, here is what it says. 11. Surgical procedures Minimum Standards • A registered veterinarian must carry out any surgical procedures on a dog, eg. desexing or dewclaw removal. • Ear cropping and tail docking of dogs are illegal procedures and must not be done unless carried out by a registered veterinarian for therapeutic reasons. • Debarking of dogs must only be done as a last resort to prevent nuisance behaviour. Debarking can only be done by a registered veterinarian in accordance with the Code of Practice for the Debarking of Dogs. Is removing dew claws on a 2 day old puppy really surgical? Bisart Dobes
How would they know if the breeder or the vet did it. I have had another breeder do our first 2 litters and they were perfect. Vet did the next one and 2 had nails regrow - both had to then go under anesthetic to have them removed !! Give me the breeders knowledge anytime. But the vet doesn't give a receipt for work done ??? (they come here). So how would they know who had done them ??

Bisart Dobes
No. Let them damn well prove otherwise. I am over all this crap. Besides they know our vet well - he goes up against them in court for most breeders in this state. They can ring him. Over it. *Them / They = RSPCA. Blakbelgian
What a stupid law. ;) How the heck are they going to police it? I don't see any adverts on SEEK requesting people to fill this job. There are just way too many dogs in the world for them to police. Just because puppy farms can't be bothered or don't know how to remove them. Well essentially it is the removal of a 'limb' albeit a very teeny tiny one. Technically it's surgery. Edited November 25, 2010 by LizT

BB Really they can't "Police it" but I can see where this comes from. There are plenty of "Nuff Nuffs" out there who lack experience and knowledge but are always willing to try to save a few dollars resulting in botch jobs of all kinds. I'm sure they exist in the Dog breeding world too. It is just a pity that legislation also get those with experience, the know how and technique to do a job, (any job) caught up in it's tangled web. I mean "technically" it's illegal to change a light bulb in Australia if you are not an electrician.

WreckitWhippet
Anyone want to take bets on how soon a breeder will be busted for it ? I can picture them now, bursting into the home of a breeder with pups less than a week old and taking them.
