Mojopoodle Posted November 19, 2010 Share Posted November 19, 2010 This is the story, my Toy Poodle whelped 5 puppies on 12 November morning and on 14 November by 9am the mum developed Metritis. They stayed at the vets until 16th 5 pm. Mum is well again although still on medication, the 4 other puppies are thriving. The problem I have is that one puppy weighed 154 grams when it went in to the vets on Sunday morning and was 119 grams Tuesday afternoon when I got them home. I have been feeding the puppy by syringe every few hours, she is hungry every 3 - 3.5 hours and taking around 4-5 mls and when she is hungry she is still attempting to suckle off her mum but she is only 140 grams and has been this weight for a day now - no gain in weight at all. Her litter mates are all between 190 & 280 grams so I separate them and let the puppy have a suck but she is not very good at it so then I feed her. She would not suck the bottle. I am going to a friends today to learn how to tube her, but what else can I do to try and get her weight gain going again, the first 24 hours home she went from 119 grams to 130 grams and it has been very slow since then. Missymoo Posted November 20, 2010 Share Posted November 20, 2010 Janet I am also tubing a baby born on the 11th... Bilbo Baggins taught me! Its very scary the first few times but now I find it very easy and not scary...also my baby has gone from the 150's to over 300g!! I started for the first day doing every hour, and then every 2 hours, have pushed off today to every 4 hours to see if he maintains or gains/looses to know where to go next. Tubing sounds like the only way to save this baby now, give it your all, its amazing to start to watch them thrive.. I started with Goats milk, then the leerburg formula and now on Wombaroo...he is doing the best on Wombaroo!! I also got ontop of his dehydration with Bisart Dobes formula (in my tube fed baby thread) and if I feel hes a bit dehydrated i add a bit to what Im tubing him..good stuff! Mojopoodle Posted November 20, 2010 Author Share Posted November 20, 2010 The night went well, the little one is very vigorous this morning & now weighs 150 grams - that was my goal too so I was very happy when I weighed her! bullyfan Posted December 2, 2010 Share Posted December 2, 2010 I would also suggest Biolac as a formula. Have found it to be a very good supplement. We've hand raised quite a few litters and I found wombaroo difficult to source, divetalac wasn't putting on the weight as much as I'd like but Biolac has been great. ( A bugger to mix up if the waters not hot enough) Good luck with your baby, fingers crossed she starts sucking properly soon, and joins her big brothers.
