ellz
I think there is a new puppy in the pipeline. As for free puppy playgroups....to be honest, I think you'd get what you paid for. A puppy "free-for-all" with little supervision, probably run by people with not a lot of experience. These usually end with big mistakes being made and puppy temperaments ruined. I would certainly think twice before either taking part or recommending them to any of my puppy people.
W Sibs
I don't think there is... it's just better to organise a small play group for your puppy with other pups or dogs that are good with other puppies. Not to scare them off.

Not to scare them off. I agree. A small group of us from our paid puppy school organised seperate play dates with each other. I have also organised meetings with other DOLers who have nice older dogs my pup can socialise with.

In Urban Dog Training, I have been told that there are at least two to three trainers to about 15 dogs, and whenever fights break out, the two pups are separated before being allowed to play with the others again. And of course, there are probably new puppy owners following their dogs around like stink on a warthog who ensure that nothing bad happens to their pooch. I think it sounds like a great opportunity for socialization.

That might be the case with Urban Dog Training (whatever that is) but I can assure you that the average "suburban" "FREE" puppy class would be no different to those classes held by many veterinary practices which are nothing but trouble for all concerned. Think a group of mixed puppies, all ages and sizes with owners of varying dog knowledge in a small space with generally one, possibly two people in charge. Many Joe Q's who have no idea what is happening probably report wonderful things, but for those of us who have had experience with such things as more experienced dog people....we tend to run a mile. They should be prevented by qualified and experienced people who can read dog body language and prevent these incidents from occuring. Honestly, that just sounds like a puppy free for all. Puppy school should consist of a combination of training exercises, quiet time and supervised play time, not just a massive play session. sorry but I really feel that puppy free for alls is where pups learn to bully others or become fearful of other dogs
Aussienot
I run a dog daycare, and would never have more than 4 or 5 dogs together, and that's only once I am sure there will be no issues. Happier with pairs and trios. With puppies, I keep the number together to 3 or 2. In a crowd, you can't be sure who is learning what. Two puppies, one calm adult can be a good thing. Learning social rules, learning how to play, learning how to calm down. Learning that just because there are other dogs around, it doesn't mean you can lose your head. 15 puppies would be a lot of crashing and bashing. Not necessarily any learning about manners. Great exercise for Labradors, Boxers and Staffies, not so good and maybe terrifying for less physical pups. A puppy free for all is not socialisation, it's survival of the fittest. Free puppy playgroup? Find a couple of friends and organise it yourself. You supervise, you make sure your puppy is having the best possible experience. dandybrush
urban dog training is a dog training business, run by a doggy behaviourlist. I took my boy to their play groups, and he is very well adjusted and socialised, as well as watching out for naughty pups, they teach the owners what to look for, when the dog is getting too highly aroused and when to settle them and when to let them play, i found it to be a very helpful experience, something i take to the dog park with me every day, when im watching the play and deciding weather it is good or not i wouldnt go to any free puppy play group, only one that is run by people who live and breathe and work with dogs, however setting up play dates with pple and dogs you know to behave would also be just as beneficial IMO

Brennan's Mum
Yep I can vouch for Urban having trainers ( and behaviourists) on hand and being well supervised and well controlled. Urban rocks...but then I am biased ( I volunteer with them)
buckley rog
Urban training break the puppies up into groups according to size (ie small/toy then medium/large). They have a puppy group up to 16 weeks and then an adolescent group from 16w up to 12months (in which to be eligible your dog must have attended both puppy preschool and advanced puppy preschool). It is great, my pup has been going regularly. The trainers keep a very close eye on both the pups and their owners and have info sessions prior. schnauzer
The Schnauzer Club has free obedience training classes at Bressington Park Homebush on Tuesday nights at 7.15pm. Once your puppy is fully vaccinated you could come along. Not sure where you live but Gladesville Vet hospital runs a terrific puppy class.
