dee lee
Honey has a delicate stomach. She has had no problem with most of the premium dry foods that I have tried her on (she has been on Artemis for most of this year and we are happy with that), but often if she eats something else will get the runs for a day or so. Yesterday she had the squirts in the morning. She only had 2 variants on her food- On Sunday I gave her some left over roast chicken and she had a bone on Saturday. She has had both foods on a regular basis and has gotten the runs once or twice from each, but mostly has been fine. She is perfectly well, just seems to have a sensitive tum. Is there anything I can do to build up her gut flora so that she will be able to tolerate other foods better?
mita
I don't know if this will help you, but I just found the answer to a sensitive gut problem in my Tibbie girl, Annie. Last August, I gave her some dog treats...& around the same time, she started having liquidy or mucousy poops. This kept going on whenever I put kibble back in her diet. And also whenever the vets tried prescription kibbles. They did blood tests & even a scan....but nothing showed up. For a while, the vets were wondering if it could be chronic colitis or inflammatory bowel disease setting in. In the meantime, the vets gave her Metragyl for any upsets. But I agreed with them in trying diet first. Because it could be just a food intolerance set off by the highly processed treats. We went back to natural foods & sorted a simple diet that I find easy to get and prepare. Annie's been on it 6 days now & she's back to her normal self. Now the vets think it was just a food intolerance based on her being sensitive to the processed stuff in the treat....& then transferred to kibble. And I'm impressed with what a natural diet can do for a sensitive gut. Edited November 16, 2010 by mita
noisymina
Yoghurt or acidophilous supplement? Withdraw chicken for a while and see what happens? My dog is clearly sensitive to roo. Some are sensitive to Beef. And a poster recently ssaid he thought chicken was the problem with his dog. Others say grains are a problem for theirs. Trial and error. One thing I have learned from human experience is that something like lactose intolerance is patchy. This is because the gut does not produce the enzyme needed to digest the lactose and it builds up and ferments in the system. It's only when it gets to a certain level of imbalance that symptoms become glaringly obvious. It can rumble on for a while before just a small amount of the offending substance tips it into overdrive. Not always easy to pinpoint the offending substance in that sort of scenario. CavsRcute
My girl developed a sensitivity to chicken when she was about 2. Really bad yellow squirts about 2am. Also happened with turkey I used Protexin to get her gut back to normal
