Missymoo
ok I am off to vet this afternoon, but thought Id put it up here too.. Mr Red was born at a fine weight (198g) then over the next two days lost weight rapidly..I just noticed he was looking ribby and popped him on scale..he was 156g!! I did try to give him a good go on mum without littermates, but seemed not to attatch well. BilboBaggins came and showed me how to tube...so Ive been tubing mostly hourly and he is now almost up to his birthweight again and sucking alot better..(i left him from midnight to 7am and he didnt drop weight to dramatically so he must be drinking better off mum) The thing is is he is still rather dehydrated?? I am using Goats milk now. My vet said perhaps he isnt digesting it well enough as wiith all the fluid he is getting he shouldnt be dehydrated..I will take in a urine sample for her. (this is my GOOD Vet she wont do dewclaws but she is totally awesome!) BB/Lizt she will also look for a cleft way back, as I mentioned this to her! He has good colour, good breath sounds, has BUNDLES of energy (I called him weeman from Jackarse as he runs around crate and pops through holes!) and fights me when I tube him.. The only thing I can think off is when he was born he was already out of his sack and wiggleing, so maybe swallowed somthing?? I will update when I get back (appt is 2.45pm) ideas? Anyone had this?? i have tried googling but its unlike fading puppy or failure to thrive...

ellz
I almost hate to say this but he sounds very much like my little Purple girl last year. In the end, at 3 weeks, I let her cross the bridge. The effort to live was just too much for her. Until 3 weeks she was a normal, but slowish puppy in my eyes and I was tubing her and stimulating her and keeping her warm when I wasn't holding her onto her mother to nurse. At 3 weeks, I took photos of Pink and Purple and the difference was astounding. There were two possibilities...one that she had a porto-hepatic shunt or the second that she had taken in too much fluid in the birth canal and her lungs had scarified which was making it impossible for her to absorb enough oxygen to do everything a puppy needs to do...ie feed AND grow and not one or the other. She was vigorous enough but just not developing as a puppy should. It was like having a couple of week old puppy in a 3 week of age body. Broke my heart to let her go, but she was dehydrated and just not "right". Pink at 3 weeks Purple at 3 weeks

Bisart Dobes
Here is a mix given to me by an 'ol timer' for dehy puppies. They told me once that they had a puppy on this and only this until 5 weeks before the puppies system was able to cope with formula. Sometimes the things we give them are too much for the system to cope with and so they get nothing from it and shut down. It worked better and quicker for the last pup I supplemented than anything else I have ever used. 500mls boiled water tsp bi-carb soda tsp salt 4 dsp Glucodin (or glucose powder) mix together till disolved and let cool. adminster at room temp - no need to store in fridge. I gave 10 mls (300gm pup) 4 times a day for 48 hrs and then 5ml 4 times a day for 48 hrs - then 10 mls once a day for 4 days. (pup was on mum 2 days after starting - just wanted to ensure all ok). Obviously you need to adjust mls required to your puppy / weight / condition. Good luck & fingers crossed
Missymoo
BD what sort of Glucose powder?? Actually his dehydraton as soo as I went to feed him after chating to ellz on FB was ok!! Typical! Not great but heaps better.. I am trying him on the "Leerburg German Shepards" formula now, its alot thicker as well. Have been trying to get in contact with my vet who does all my Liver shunt testing at Werribee to have a chat to her..exam time so im chasing her! Its possible it could be this... Man, Im fast getting over breeding, Ive not yet had one 'easy' litter!! Im posting all the gritty details so BYB will read and think twice!! (yet everything seems to go smoothly for them...agghhh!) he IS drinking/sucking alot more I am noticing , so that is positive!
SwaY
I have been told that you should not feed goats milk to a newborn - older puppies it is ok for. Not enough fat in goats milk for newborns. That little baby is almost toy breed size, and needs to be feed 2 hourly. 6ml per 28grams of body weight, divided by the the total number of daily feeds. Lets say puppy weighs 200 gm 200 divided by 28 = 7.14 7.14 x 6ml = 42.85ml 42.85ml divided by 10 (daily number of feeds for a 4 day old pup) equals 4.3ml per feed This needs to be adjusted daily as the puppy gains weights. SwaY
If he is dehydrated why not use some recharge?
*Lolapalooza*
Can you do sub cutaneous fluids/saline behind his neck? The vet will have all the stuff. A friend with a failing puppy (she got squashed) used rectal glucose (in 1ml syringe) to give sugars and hydrate more. (The bowel has a big surface are so absorbs fluid)

Bisart Dobes
BD what sort of Glucose powder?? Glucodin - you can get it from the chemist and most supermarkets. I like to keep supplementing them for a few days past when they start to improve - they are improving because of the extra you supplement and when you stop too soon they can just deteriorate again. Also I have found time and time again the simpler you keep it the better they do - their systems are still developing remember. Sub- fluids are good if the vet will do them but again need to be done every 2 hours not just once at the vet. If they will give you the equip to do it at home - great. Who said breeding was easy ??? Shazzapug
im stumped with this little booger..just fed and piched him and HES HYDRATED now??!!!! (not complaining though) In my last litter I only got one survivor, she is now 6 weeks old....and I googled Fading Puppy Syndrome....and found a site and it explained exactly what was happening to my puppy, same as your puppy. It reccommended Karo Syrup dropped straight on their tongue...and I happened to have bought some from Kerry at Whelping supplies because of Lisa aka Andisa re Puppy milk recipe. So that gave her energy for inbetween feeds.

I credit the Leerburg method for saving Maverick and will be feeding their formula to all pups and lactating bitches from now on. I hope that Troy will pin the site for future use because it has so much excellent information.
