Hi all :)

Just wondering if its ok to get stitches wet? My boy has two lots of stitches that he got 7 days ago, and its really hot where we are so im hoping its ok to give him a nice cool bath?

Thanks!

No. Moisture will be drawn into the wound by the stitches and bacteria may be drawn in with it. Give him a sponge bath instead and avoid the area with the stitches.

Definitely best not to let them get wet if you can help it. No reason to bath the whole dog, spray him underneath with water from a spray bottle (unless that's where the stitches are of course!) or give him frozen treats or just put ice cubes in his water. Lying on a damp towel on tiles with a fan cools most dogs down pretty well. If he's got a long heavy coat getting him soaking wet can actually make him hotter when the moisture in his coat heats up.

Damn thats ashame! Yeah I will wet his back and his tummy and sit him in front of the fan which should hopefully do the trick ;) Will also go put some icecubes in his water bowl cos I think he will like to chase them round the bowl :)

Thanks!

Hehe I was mortified to discover stitches can't be allowed to get wet after I picked my last foster beagle up from the vet, desexed from the pound without the opportunity to bathe her first. She STANK for 10 days and it was horrible! I ended up buying aloe-vera wipes from the supermarket just to get some of the gunk and smell out of her coat. She was still dirty, but it was bearable until I could give her a proper bath after the stitches came out.

I thought it was a bit of a lax rule, but contacted my beagle guru about it and was told NO!!! NEVER GET STITCHES WET! EVER!!!

Oh no Inka3095, that would have been horrible! I would have thought that they would bath a dog that was dirty before desexing to minimise infection or something? But great idea about the aloe vera wipes to take away some of the stink
