Vaccination Question.

Was wondering what the case is with a dog that may have been in contact with a parvo dog? If the dog has been vaccinated AFTER contact, could the dog still develop symptoms, or could it just incubate parvo (if so for how long)?

Incubation period is about 3 - 7 days, or there abouts.

Being vaccinated after exposure is unlikely to do much to stop him getting infected.

If there's a chance he's been exposed to parvo, and you can't afford the treatment, then I'd suggest you take out dog insurance now. Early and aggressive treatment of parvo cases has a good success rate, but it is $$$.

Thankyou. I am not entirely certain if he has had contact with an infected dog, but there is a high chance. I'll be taking as many precautions as I can, I have been cleaning up after him and spraying his toileted spots with bleach.

If you know a dog has been exposed to parvo (or a high risk area such as a pound), keep them away from other dogs/ penned/ quarantined for 14 to 21 days.

If you are talking about a family dog with a known vaccination history and up-to-date boosters the chances of developing anything is greatly reduced but you still should be careful just in case. :D

Not sure vaccinating after exposure would be of any use but am far from an immunology expert. :D Best quiz your vet on that one, I've heard a recent vaccination can affect subsequent parvo tests giving false results?? - please someone correct me if that's incorrect.
