kittikat
This morning on our morning walk we met one of the boys friend from our Doggy Park Appears, he has just been diagnosed with Kennel Cough which owner told me he caught from park ,he must have been to vet Monday/Tuesday...... One of my boys played with him on Sunday and another Frenchie really played with him as well - so both have been exposed ,amongst other numerous doggy's We have alot of young dogs (under 1 year) & a few pups in our park , so I would like to notify the owners tonite However, I do have some questions as I have never experinced kennel cough before .... - What are the signs I /others should be looking for? - Incubation period? - Does innoculations help my boys from not getting it ? (they are nearly 2 and have had 2 lots of innoculations) - Are there different strains of kennel cough like a human cold? I do have my suspicions (knowing where this young boy lives )but of course can't point the finger & of course is too late now but would like to know and pass onto all the other owner's (some are less dog savvy) the signs... My boys seem okay - playing, eating,& no weird hacking or anything unusal from what I can see Any help/replies would be greatly appreciated
poodlefan
This morning on our morning walk we met one of the boys friend from our Doggy ParkAppears, he has just been diagnosed with Kennel Cough which owner told me he caught from park Your dogs met a dog just diagnosed with Kennel Cough? If he's actively got it, forget about where that dog might have caught it. Your dogs have been exposed to HIM!! What on earth was his owner doing with a dog with KC out in public? ellz
Ahhhh...welcome to my nightmare! I currently have two dogs with kennel cough. Incubation is from 2 - 14 days, usually around the 10 day mark. Dogs can show some lethargy, loss of appetite and just not being "themselves" even as much as a few days before they start to cough. The cough may be a true "cough" or it might sound like the dog has something caught in its throat and is choking. Often followed by a good old-fashioned retch when you're sure the detached lung is going to appear in a gooey heap in front of the dog. Being vaccinated against Kennel Cough is much the same as being vaccinated for the flu. It still won't stop you from getting a different strain, but may lessen the severity of the effects. Kennel Cough isn't necessarily dangerous in itself but the secondary effects if severe can be debilitating for very young, very old, or ill individuals. In my case, I took my Kelpie to the Royal on the Wednesday and then the Kelpie and my Stafford puppy to a dog show on the Sunday. The Kelpie doesn't run with the Stafford at the moment because she's finishing her first season and she is not coughing. The Stafford started to look a bit "off" and was a lot quieter late last week and knocked back a couple of meals. (Around 10 days from the dog show). On Sunday night, he started coughing for Australia (14 days from dog show). A couple of hours later, his mother started coughing as well. All are vaccinated. I've kept both isolated from my other dogs, have been putting Benadryl down their throats, keeping the water up to them and taking their temperatures regularly. Both seem to be on the improve at the present time, if their cheekiness is any indication. But I'm still not happy that they caught it in the first place. Ons
My foster dog had kennel cough, she had it for about 2 weeks but only really miserable for about 3 - 4 days, I put her on antibiotics as she was in poor condition. Poor little thing, hearing her cough I have 3 other dogs and I must confess they were a bit behind in their kennel cough vacinations (but not there other vacinations). My two boys did not get any symptoms at all, they were fine. My female golden retriever caught it but she coughed for one day, was a bit off colour the next day and then as right as rain after that. so I can't say whether your dog will get kennel cough or not, just what happened when my dogs were exposed

I don't think the diagnosed dog owners knew he had it - but do now and he is only being walked in suburb streets not parkland etc I met them briefly very ,very early this morning...my dogs didn't go anywhere near him...they where walking in middle of road & kept far away from me But as I stated, we where with him on Sunday so I am pretty sure my boys have been unknowingly exposed plus ALOT of other dogs @10 or more :D The "suspect dog" lives next door to this boy - I don't know whether to question the owners (who are new to area) , I have never heard of cases of kennel cough in my area even with my last dog and I have been there for over 10 years now ...their dog "hacks & hacks continually"... maybe they think it is normal
