ludersachi
My girl birthed last Thursday, having 2 little healthy boys. The pups are gaining weight but I've just checked my girls milk supply and it doesn't seem to be huge. I am able to compare as I've had litters with bitches with lots of milk. If the pups are gaining weight should I be concerned or am I being paranoid? How would I increase her milk production?
Bisart Dobes
With only two puppies she won't have a huge amount - they tend to only produce what they need. But I give a milk drink which is said to increase milk production - increased fluids will increase her capacity to produce milk. Milk drink is: 2 tbsp honey disolved in 1/2 cup boiling water - add cup of milk (I use goats milk) and then 2 egg yolks - whisk it up and ensuring it is warm not hot give to your girl. I have only ever had one bitch not like this all the others love it. Best of luck with your babies .
bordacollies4me
i have used a similar mummy milkshake suggested, and i have also used some alfalfa drops, which helps considerably
Bilbo Baggins
1 heaped teaspoon of Fenuegreek powder in her food once a day. I find that with a small number of pups the mum cuts down her production to prevent mastitis in the unused boobs. But this of course affects all boobs. By giving Fenuegreek it ones increases the supply in the ones that are being stimulated.
persephone
If puppies are fat & full, I would not try to increase milk production .. they don't require much in the first week or two ... and if they have round bellies, they are getting plenty :D
angelsun
I agree with the above....mom produces what the demand requires in this case when pups are gaining and thriving...would be different if they weren't. Too much milk is a possible problem....remember, A cup moms can breast feed the same as D cups....size of the udder/breast/teat is not an indication of quantity (or quality)
