'unusual' Looking Dogs

Grrr rant time!

I know Louis looks unusual, but is it necessary for all the boys at each surf club we walk past to laugh and point and say 'look at that ugly dog' :( I know they're just kids, and Louis obviously doesn't know what they are saying, but I feel bad for him. Mind you I hear plenty of adults snigger as he walks past too. Also the amount of adults you hear say 'oh look at that shaved dog'. I'm gonna have to get a T-shirt that says on the back 'no he's not shaved, it's all natural' :)

Luckily some people are interested and stop to ask about him, so then I get a chance to explain just what he is :(

If you have an uncommon dog, that looks a bit unusual, what sort of comments do you find you get?

When I had Sid the crestie cross here and I'd take him out, lots of people would stare and have side comments. I'd just smile and walk up and start a conversation, asking if they'd like to meet him, touch his skin and talk about him a bit. It was a ice breaker on a number of occasions.

I even agree when people say my pei have faces only a mother will love. I'll take any opportunity to talk dogs and push rescue.

I figure the dogs don't really care about the words being spoken anyway.

It is bad enough owing a WHippet, people either love them or think they are half starved or weedy and ugly.

Someone else on here has on their Sigi - Chinese Cresteds, saving on shampoo or something like that! Maybe get a shirt with that on it?????

Try having a border collie with very little white on him. I frequently get asked what he is suprisingly enough by ANKC people as well as the public but not the working dog people. I remember one ANKC breeder BC looking down her nose at him and asking "what is that?"

He is main register and he is within the standard for colour.

What?! are they blind, peis have gorgeous faces!

I think it's totally rude to say negative things about how someone else's dog looks - if a dog doesn't appeal to you just don't say anything about its appearance! But really, most dogs think they are pretty good looking, don't they, and couldn't care less what people say

 Love the cut off tale comment!!

We get everything, from "What's that, some kind of staghound cross?" (I hate the term staghound) to "hey look at the Lassie-cross dogs", to "Geez, they've got really weird long faces."

And... "A Borz-what?". Resulting in the inevitable explaination which seems to help people understand - "they're Russian Wolfhounds". Which results in lots of knowledgable nodding and "Ahhh, yes, wolfhounds... Were they bred to hunt then?"

:mad

I used to own Bull Terriers and people were always saying how ugly they were! My own mother used to say that they were her ugliest grandchildren! People would also loudly call out 'look at the Pitt Bulls' and grab their children and give me a wide berth.

Although it wasn't all bad, I was outside a Woollies one day waiting for OH when a little old lady (easily 80+ years old) came out and told me how beautiful they were and spent 10 minutes kissing and cuddling them!

VEry clever Bedazzled.

Yep we are in the habit of chopping of BC's tails. They make much better house dogs that way

I have lost count of the amount of time I have heard "Muuumm look at that SKINNY dog" at the top of some darlings lungs.

Or "Mate ya need to feed ya dog"

I usually answer have you ever seen a fat sprinter or athlete??????? Then they conceed they haven't.

One day I will have educated this lil 'ol town......ONE day.

"You could put a saddle on that"

No, your comment is not original, nor is it funny.

Oh, and the comments increase exponentially when you're walking two Danes.

But I do get quite a few people who are interested in Danes as a breed, so I get to talk about them heaps.

Erik seems to confound and fascinate people. I am yet to understand why, but they often ask if he's a shepherd cross. Or a shepherd cross corgi, or a husky cross. We've had "He looks like a sawn off shepherd!" I don't mind, because Swedish Vallhunds aren't exactly common anywhere. And they do look unusual with the wolf grey coat and the short legs. Most people usually follow it up with compliments on how beautiful/handsome/awesome/fun he is. I only get bummed that he's taken all the attention away from Kivi. I'm like "Have you noticed my other dog, who has gorgeous, striking facial markings and glorious flowing fur that I spend hours brushing??"

Occasionally someone asks if Erik's a Swedish Vallhund. It's always very cool. They usually end up being from the UK.

I do get strangers commenting about Tilly, but in a positive way normally  . I normally hear strangers say "that dog has one blue eye" as I walk past, or parents will often point out her eyes to their children, either that or they will kind of do a double take or stare at her. It really doesn't bother me, because I love Tilly for who she is on the inside, not how she looks...having a dog who looks cute is just an added bonus, but obviously I am biased!

Isnt this just one of the quirks of having an 'unusual' dog? Not everyone knows about Cresties or every other rare or unusual breed out there

Thats exactly the conversation i have atleast twice a week. We get a few teenagers(the feral kind mind you) who say he's ugly and strange but everyone else say he's beautiful.

My kids get the usual, particularly when we had two smooth salukis:

Passerby: Are they retired racers?

Me: No, they are related to greyhounds, but these are smooth coated salukis.

Passerby to wife, 2 minutes down the track: they are greyhounds you know.
