Yesmaam
On page 11 there is an ANKC survey re: breeders of GSD's to screen parents for hip and elbow dysplasia through an "official HD and ED control scheme". This topic has possibly come up a few months ago but we were waiting for it to be rolled out into QLD or something like that. The ANKC did not explain what constitutes an "official control scheme" in their request. What does it mean, does anyone know?
BRUVIC
In Australia there are only two officiallly recognised schemes and they are: GSDCA Hip and Elbow Scheme and the AVA Hip and Elbow Scheme. Both schemes use recognised Radiologists. Both the radiologists that the GSDCA use (Prof Wyburn and Dr Lavelle) also assess for the AVA Scheme. The system for assessing hips in Australia is 'numerical' in as much as each hip is scored between 0 and 56 ... 0 being the 'best'. Dogs assessed overseas are usually graded from 'normal' through to 'still acceptable' or 'noch zugelassen', hence the differentiation in wording between Australian bred and Imported dogs. Obviously, the recognised scheme for Australian bred dogs is either of the above. Imported dogs' gradings, as stated in the survey, must be deemed to be 'acceptable for breeding' in their country of origin. All radiologists use an international system for grading elbows. For the record, German Shepherd Dog Council requirement to achieve the "A" Stamp for hips requires a score of 8 or less on either hip. The proposed L.R.L. (Litter Registration Limitation) in this survey is NOT intended to alter the requirements of the GSDCA. The purpose of the survey is to ensure that all German Shepherd Dogs meet at LEAST the L.R.L. requirement. Trust this assists in your understanding of 'control schemes'. Tarmons
The rationale for the changes are outlined below: · As the current regulation stands, a sire or dam of a litter could in fact be severely dysplastic and/or be severely affected with elbow dysplasia (e.g. Grade 3 or UAP). · In this day and age with the increased activity of the “anti-dog lobby” and more importantly the “anti pure bred lobby” and in addition, dealing with ever changing State and Federal legislation it is imperative that German Shepherd puppies being offered for sale to the public are sound in body and mind and become a responsible member of the community. · It is over ten years since the requirement was introduced for German Shepherd Dogs to show proof of x-ray for hips and elbows. · It should be noted that a total hip score of 24 (with no more than 12 on each hip) is almost twice the breed average and hence the majority of the breeding stock will still be utilised in the breeding program but it will ensure the removal of animals severely affected with hip dysplasia. · Animals with Grade Three or Ununited Anconeal Process (UAP) form a small percentage of animals x-rayed, hence numerically are very small but in reality pose a real threat of increasing the incidence of Elbow Dysplasia within the German Shepherd Dog therefore only Normal, Grade One and Grade Two graded animals should be considered for registration on the ANKC Main Registrar. So having your x-rays scored by Dr Wyburn is sufficient, is that correct? Will it be the ANKC that records the HD and ED score and permits the breeding to be registered then? If I have a good x-ray score from Dr Wyburn can that be submitted to the GSDCA for AZ stamp? Cheers
