skunk
Hey all, so my staffy x lab has abit of dandruff, noting tooo serious altho id like to take care of it. what sorta shampoo can i get to cure it ? or diet ? hes currently on science diet adult dog blend. hes an indoor/outdoor dog & whenever he comes inside he leaves ALOT of hair behind ! surely its semi normal for them to drop hair daily, but he even still drops hair after iv given him a brush! petshop sold me a brush that strips the outer/top coat hairs only (so i was told). is this normal ? or he shouldnt be dropping hair that much ? thanks guys
persephone
Labradors shed 25 hours a day, from my experience - so guess your dog is following true to this trait Dandruff? Diet changes will help ...feeding some oily fish, perhaps ? How often is he bathed, and what do you use normally? What else does he get apart from the Hills? Bones? treats? noisymina
Where is the "dandruff"? Is it all over, or in particular spots? eg MY dog tends to get a bit itchy/dandruffy on her back, just forward from the tail. Only in that area. So she gets washed in either Malaseb shampoo - or the Dermicare Natural Shampoo - and I rub some Pyohex cream on that area after her bath - and sometime inbetween baths. Diet helped a bit, but i've never been able to beat it totally.

whiskedaway
My pup had dandruff when we got her. She was on a raw diet and we switched her to Supercoat which made a huge change in her coat. It was softer and had no dandruff. She is now on Pro Plan and her coat is still lovely. We also give her sardines once a week which helps with her coat and skin. sezling
When my dog had bad dandruff on his lower back (similar to what you are indicating) it was due to an inappropriate diet. I went through a few types of kibble before I found one that didn't make his coat go terribly dry (Eagle Pack fish) or hair drop out at an alarming rate (Pro Plan Sensitive). Black Hawk Holistic started to resolve the coat issues however it didnt suit his bowels (persistent loose motions) and now Nutro Lamb and Rice is maintaining both healthier coat and elimination. It does take a bit of trial and error with diet unfortunately especially as what suits some dogs might not suit others and you'll only know if you try. Stitch
Vets can take a scraping from your dogs coat which will tell if it has a fungal, bacterial, or mite problem then prescribe antibiotics, cortisone or whatever if they are necessary. Sometimes it can be diet related and changing to a diet that doesn't have as much cereal/grain can help. Malaseb shampoo is very good for 'dandruff' but some problems take more than just shampoo - that's why if it is a persistant problem you may need to go to the vet initially to get it diagnosed. Paul Bright
Regular bathing helps a lot. Using Nizoral shampoo dissolved in a small amount of water at least once a week helped when my dog had dandruff. She used to scratch a lot but after treating her with that shampoo, she's fine now. Hope this helps!
