LizT
From the Herald Sun Monday November 1st. 2010 A rare, expensive dog is the centre of a police hunt after he was stolen from a pound. The dog, a 22 month old Central Asian Shepherd aptly named "Pirate" because of his distinctive colouring, was stolen by dognappers who broke into the Nillumbik dog pound in Plenty at the weekend. And at $5000 a pup, his owners are peeved, especially since they were fighting a legal battle to get him out. The theft of the black and white dog was discovered at 10.00 am yesterday when his family went to visit him. Unfortunately for them, Pirate had been housed at the pound because they were in a legal dispute with the council over his behaviour. Distressed owners said there had been three break-ins during Pirates 10 weeks at the pound. I've done everything to try to get them to secure the place. I've been fighting them like you wouldn't believe. He's a beautiful animal and I've lost him. They've stolen him because of the type of dog he is. He's very rare and I knew it would happen once they knew what he was. I just hope who evers got him will drop him back. Anyone with information is urged to contact Eltham Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 Anyone ever heard of a Central Asian Shepherd??? Plan B
How did he end up in the pound anyway? There's this article too... LizT
How did he end up in the pound anyway? According to the news article he was there due to a "legal dispute with the council over his behaviour". Think he'd been a naughty puppy? Perhaps he's an "escape artist"?? Oh I see, he'd had been a naughty puppy, attacking someone in August it seems??? Edited November 2, 2010 by LizT

poodlefan
Pirate’s owners attended Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court on October 18 where they were found guilty over their dog’s attack on a person in Panton Hill on August 24.They were given a six month good behaviour bond and are still negotiating with the council over whether Pirate will be declared a dangerous dog or put down. I'd be starting the search in the yards of friends and relatives of the owners. What sort of CAS would let a complete stranger handle him?
LizT
maybe he was just doing his job Don't know, without the full details one can only "speculate', could have been a jump up and slurp effort that resulted in someone getting knocked over, who knows what consitutes an "attack"??? The "Diamond Valley Leader" says the dog was seen wondering the streets of Greensborough after he'd been stolen. So whoever had him didn't 'handle' him for long at all! He wouldn't be easy to hide though?? How far/hard do you think they'd look for this dog? He'd be safe an hour away from the pound I reckon. There was a news report earlier in the week where a dog owner was sentenced to some jail time for springing his dog from the pound. It was under a destruction order for livestock killing/dog aggression. He got it out, moved to WA and it attacked he later had it PTS. I can hazard a guess as to why. ETA: Here's the article. Sound familiar? Edited November 2, 2010 by poodlefan

Sound familiar? No, I'm thinking more along the lines that he is not your common garden variety dog and given the press cover would possibly be recognised by a member of the public. I don't believe they spend much time 'looking' at all.
poochmad
Diamond Valley Leader A link into the above news article shows that Staffy's have been stolen as well; a female and a male. Sounds like they are either looking at a quick way to make some bucks (or heaven forbid) looking to use them for fighting. Here's hoping the dogs will be well looked after and loved...
