Thanks for starting this thread mackenzie11.

OH asked somebody he works with what her son in law asks for .She has just sent a care package for him...... coffee and lollies. So I thought those coffee sachets would be good .I wondered about putting some cards with stamps on envelopes in too so they can send them to their friends or family.

Defence pays for all soldier mail - so stamps or postage type things are not needed. :)

I went to the PO yesterday to get info on mailing, you have to have the numbers for the area you are mailing to. The PO printed out a sheet for me with all the info on it.

They were really helpfull.

i put the address in the first post, sorry if i missed an area

that would be great  , i never thought of those, when i read about it it only mentions the army, shame they dont include ALL the armed forces, cause they are ALL away from their families and loves ones at this time of yr and some are away with no one to care about them, good idea, would be great when you get the info

I've spoken to a minister for defence's assistant and they couldn't give me the info because it hasn't been finalised yet but she said it should be ready in the next couple of weeks. I will keep a look out for it and post it here when its released.

You are all doing a fantastic job and believe me, the soldiers & their dogs will appreciate your efforts in more ways than one could imagine.

When my OH was over there recently his first top 7 choices for every care package were;

Coffee, Flavoured Teas like Chai, Vegemite, packet soups - in winter, packet drinks like tang & refresh, Allens snakes and peppermints.

So these 7 things went in almost every package but I did have to buy him minus 15deg socks to keep feet warm in the extreme cold conditions over winter.

Usually the blokes (and girls) will open their packages then share everything in them with each other.

Another exciting thing you could send is a recent Australian newspaper so they can catch up on news from home... many soldiers whose families do not send anything, love to read a news article from home. Although on saying this, most have access to computers so they read news on there.

Edited to add from OH - M&M's & can openers are issued in ration packs, but he says ANZAC bickies (or any bickies for that matter) are popular as they share them with each other over a coffee and potatoe chips are also popular as they can only get American Pringles which he says are not the same as chips from home.

From a soldiers wife to you all, THANK YOU! :p

Defence welcomes all expressions of public support for Australian Defence Force personnel deployed on overseas operations in the lead up to Christmas.

The celebration of Christmas is an important time for all members of the Australian community but especially so for those Defence and other Australian government agency personnel and families that are separated during Christmas by operational deployments.

The best and quickest way to express support is to send a message to the troops at: [email protected].

The next best method to show your support to deployed ADF personnel is through the RSL Australian Forces Overseas Fund (AFOF) which provides packages, twice yearly, to Australian Defence Force and Australian Federal Police personnel serving overseas.

The packages contained various items to remind personnel of home, and included ANZAC biscuits, glucose confectionery, salted peanuts, dried fruit, muesli bars, cake, lollies, a selection of RSL newsletters, a letter of appreciation on behalf of all Australians, RSL State Branch contact details and Membership contact details.

An additional service provided this year by Defence is the establishment of special Post Office box addresses. These Australian Forces Post Office (AFPO) numbers will remain active from 15 November 2010 to 15 December 2010.
