Crisovar
I just wish there was a working dog formula..... My Border Collies can't maintain on BH.. They are normally fed Eukanuba Premium performance & when I tried BH over 2mths, I had to double the intake for 3 of them & the rest about 1/2 increase. Then their poo's were a bit smelly & softer than I'd like. Strange that my two BC's do so well on it. The girl is 19 kilos & the young boy is 23 kilos & VERY active. They get a cup full each a day plus 100g of meat or tinned fish & in the mornings they get 1/2 a turkey neck & if anything, I have to keep a watch that they don't put weight on. I am very happy the way my two are going on BH....here is a picture of my girl with her stash from last weekends agility trial :) & their poos are a real delight to pick up & only twice a day & hardly any smell why do you think it's strange? Not all dogs do well on the same food. You're not even feeding straight BH but a mixture of raw and dry. Unless you are only feeding straight BH I don't think anyone can claim that it is BH doing the good or bad things people are saying. This is it exactly I don't understand how people can even think that there is a one miracle food that suits all. Why so much disbelief that BH does not suit all dogs....No food does. I can't feed certain foods to my dogs because they are not suitable..doesn't mean I am saying they are crap they simply don't suit. The same goes for recommended feeding amounts...the amount that keeps one dog in good condition could have another of the same breed or size looking like a toast rack or a hippo. Someone in one of these "feeding threads" quoted an amount for a dog that would have my own dog of the same breed looking like a cruelty case. Every dog has individual requirements and that is all there is to it. It isn't rocket science nor is it the end of the world if a food doesn't suit. Thats very true hence why I feed only one type of Dry food & no extras... Only way to know whats happening... I would also hope that the dry food I feed is balanced... & by adding extras now potentially unbalances the diet. But I prepared to make the 2mths then make a decision. Otherwise I'll be looking for another brand. OK...so you think that by adding 100g meat or fish & half a turkey neck to my dogs 1 cup of kibble is unbalancing their diet. So you are saying that your dogs do not ever get a raw meaty bone or anything else except kibble in case it "unbalances" their diet. Please tell me what is "unbalanced" by what I give my dogs. If my dogs diet is so "unbalanced" as you say, then please explain why they are so lovely & healthy & active, maintain good weight & have such perfect poos. I am not claiming that it is the BH alone that my dogs are doing well on...I am claiming it is the diet they are on which includes BH. I can't believe there are people out there that do not ever give their dogs a RMB or any extras.....how boring for the dogs. So please explain to me, what I am doing that is unbalancing my dogs" diet & if so....why are they so healthy I have the same type of dogs as DannyBC. Maybe you should try "unbalancing" their diet in the same manner I do, & you might have the same success. and who exactly are you replying too cause I never said anything about your diet being unbalanced. Can't name them off the top of my head but I have seen that advice previously. It is usually about 85% - ie if you add more than 15% other stuff to dry food, then it is unbalanced. Each manufacturer has a different level but I think 85% is about average.

I would have thought it was more to do with adding trace elements like calcium & magnesium as supplements rather then actual food. Complete and Balanced means, it is complete and balance to feed on its own to supply the required nutrition to maintain a dogs life, the only ways these formulas can be thrown out of balance is by adding large amounts of products such as calcium, magnesiums etc, There is absolutely nothing wrong with adding meat or fish or vegies etc

Guest english.ivy
Actually the amount of BH you are feeding him is not enough to maintain him over winter. Unless you are prepared to feed him a substantially increased ration or add extra calories by way of added fats etc your Pointer will continue to drop condition over the colder months unless he is rugged or inside. He is simply burning off too much keeping warm no matter what brand you feed. He is cold. I appreciate your suggestions but I am not a clueless dog owner, like many who appear on this forum. He is seen by my friend weekly, who is a qualified vet nurse [not an actual vet I know] and I am in contact with his breeder and his sires breeder. I also never said he won't be coated, I just said that he chewed his other coat and needs to be fixed up or a new one purchased. Probably a new coat seeing as there are some sales on at the moment. Now back to the tread topic of Black Hawk Holistic :)

Sayreovi
I read all your posts and by the end thought the same as Crisovar, she (he?) doesn't come across as accusing or negative more helpful than anything, too me anyway Just because you aren't a "clueless dog owner" doesn't mean you can't receive advice on something simple. Why do so many people in this thread get so defensive quickly and thinking everyone is accusing them of everything under the sun? Crisovar
If certain people read all that is posted, and didn't reply in negative/accusing tones. Good Grief EI If I wanted to call you clueless I would have. Obviously you have an issue with your dog and his weight over winter of you wouldn't have posted what you have on more than one thread. Your dog is cold that is why he loses weight what would you like us all to tell you. The only miracle fix is more calories or a rug.

mumtoshelley
why is it people think black hawk is the best dog food out there. Then they judge people if there pets don't do well on it. # of my dogs do alright on black hawk eg they scratch throughout the day. Shelley my golden retriever smells more when feed black hawk. Yes I still feed black hawk to 2 of my goldens and my chihuahua, Missy my whippet has horrible gas on black hawk since feeding her earthborn holistic grain free primitive she hasn't had such horrible gas. So black hawk doesn't suit every dog out. If English.ivy wants to try another kibble to see if that would help then why not. To say cause the dog is outside in the cold is why it won't gain weight is bull, can someone please tell my golden retriever Shelley she should be lossing weight and be really thin,She and my other golden are both outdoor dogs altho there in a varander with a wood heater to lay in front of. Still outside in the cold yet Shelley doesn't find it hard to maintain her weight and she is only getting feed 1 cup a day.

It's when people who no longer feed it continually come into this thread who keep saying it doesn't suit their dog/s.....we understood the first time. No need to keep harping on about the same thing. If a dog is using alot of energy trying to keep warm and isn't fed extra to compensate for that extra expense then of course it's going to lose weight! Your dog is a Golden Retriever bred to retrieve ducks out of freezing cold water, compact build with a layer of fat and an insulated double coat to protect from the freezing. English Ivy has a pointer......a big yet fairly light framed dog with a very short coat and little body fat....so it's not bull that the latter would lose condition as your GR in the same environment. tlc
I can see this thread turning sour as it has in the past, which is a pity. Especially if people think they can't come in here to ask questions incase they get shot down. I don't really get why people get so out of control, crazy and pedantic about what their dogs are being fed and it certainly shouldn't be anything to argue over. I think most of the people who post here are users and fans of the black hawk who have dogs that do well on it. I am one of them and glad that my dogs do well on it as its a great price and a great product! Lucky for me I guess. I don't think everyone here thinks black hawk is the best food out there more like the best food for their particular dog/s and I certainly haven't seen anyone judging anyone' else if their dogs don't do well on it. All I see is well meaning people who like to give advice to others. Also don't forget we have the actual founder (Sherel) of the food posting In here and keeping us informed on what's new and plans for Black Hawks future so I for one do t want to see this thread go to hell in a hand basket! JulesP
It is not unusual for any animal to need more food in winter. Humans tend to want more food too, lol. I don't think that can be blamed on BH not working. I don't feed BH but read this thread as it is very entertaining, sorry!
