Freebies/discounts To Proven Good Homes

Just interested in the comments in Sway's thread about replacing the puppy that died of snake bite but didn't want to hijack her thread.

Do you all charge the same rate for a puppy to a proven good home and a unproven home?

I'm thinking here specifically of situations where the new puppy would not be replacing a dog that has died from an issue that could be traced back to the breeder. So, situations where there is no moral or legal obligation on the breeder to give a freebie or a discount.

If you charge the same no matter what, is it because you can't afford to give a pup or sell a pup at a significant discount, or is it some other reason? Does the amount of money the owner has factor into your thoughts about it? Does the ease with which you can place puppies in your breed factor into your thoughts? Perhaps the answer would be different for a Tenterfield Terrier than for an Afghan Hound, for example.

What about homes that reliably put titles on dogs at their own expense? Assuming they are also good homes that is, I know that is not necessarily the case.

Any other thoughts?

I dont ask money from exceptional homes when they want subsequent puppies from me. That is when they want pets and dont want to show or breed. It would be different if it was a breeder/showie. The worst part of breeding for me is sorting through puppy buyers so when someone whos already bought a pup from me and done all the right things, treats it like royalty, kept in touch etc, i feel very priveleged when they want to come back for more and relieved that its one less home i have to worry about for the pup.

I think it all depends on circumstances.

When you have a low-liltter-number breed, with high chance of C section, ive lost money before litter is even born. however, saying that, I gave away a dog for free as he didnt turn out show quality, to a family that is one of the best around.

I would give a free one, but only if i could. Circumstances have changed since I could give away pups.

I dont mind swallowing the (up too)2k bill that comes with breeding a singleton, but I just cant afford to give them away anymore.

Not very often. I give discounts to people who have previously bought a dog from me as a matter of course.

I don't care much about titiles, and I know the dogs don't, so pups go to the best home on offer - whether that is pet or show.

As I hopefully have, and continue to, choose excellent homes for my babies no-one gets a discount or free puppy for being a good home, that should be a given before puppy is placed

I have sold pups with a generous discount to people who have bought from me before and proven themselves excellent owners. I have also given away adults to excellent, proven homes where I know they will be spoilt and treasured family members.
