Milbemax

I have always used Milbemax on the cats and dogs back in the UK for intestinal worming, as Drontal usually caused vomiting My new vets here don't stock it, but they are getting some in for me. The receptionist who ordered it for me thought it only did intestinal worms, so I was going to get something different for heartworm.....However looking around on the web seems to indicate Milbemax is a heartworm preventative as well

Does anyone use Milbemax for heartworm control?

Given monthly Milbemax does cover Heartworm as well.

I don't use it but yes it is registered for Heartworm prevention.

On recommendation from my vet I have changed my dogs over to it (was told it is the cheaper version of interceptor)... and yes it is monthly for heartworm or 3 monthly for other intestinal worms.

I ordered it online from Pet Products on the web. It is not listed on their site but they do have it (or they can get in in).

So does that mean that if you use it monthly for the heart worm factor, you are actually worming your dog for intestinal worms 3 times as much as is normally the case (which btw IMO is far too frequent in any case)?

And does it mean that if you use it 3 x monthly for the intestinal worm factor, you end up doubling up every 3 months if you then also give heart worm meds?

I'm afraid I just don't see the point in a medication that will count for one thing but overdose on it if you want it to count also for the other thing.

But then I have had a cold, my head and ears are blocked up and I'm a bit past thinking tonight :D .

ingredients of Milbemax are the same as Interceptor

Milbemax : small dog up to 5kg: a tablet containing 2.5 mg milbemycin oxime and 25 mg praziquantel. (I would give mine 2)

Interceptor: 4 -11kg: Each Chew Contains 5.75mg Milbemycin Oxime, 57 Praziquantal

many years ago we used to sell and endorse milbemax a lot in General Practice.

It's quite a good product so i am not sure why it is not as commonly heard of or used as it used to be?

I guess the other companies like Interceptor have spent more money on packaging and advertising.

We were put onto it by a vet in the UK after drontal causing problems, it's quite widely used over there

I'm happy to know I can treat heart worm with a product they are all used to
