To Participate In Obedience And Agility Trails Do The Dogs Need To Be

That is a good point :)

For agility in NSW you do have the option of ADAA and ADAC where the dog does not have to be ANKC registered, you just register with the association (the dog can have any name you like with them). For ANKC obedience and agility trials though they do have to be ANKC registered. They DO NOT have to be purebred or pedigree though, you can register crossbreeds or non pedigreed purebreds on the Associate Register, and some herding breeds (like WKC reg Kelpies) that have their own registries can go on the Sporting Register. There is no alternate organisation for obedience as far as I know.

how does one get into obedience comps?

and how do you complete the relevant papar work for you dog. i have no idea of the governing bodys with the abbreviations.

How do you enter?

1. Your dog needs to be registered, either on Limited or Main register or on the Associate Register done through DogsNSW

2. You need to be a member of DogsNSW http://dogsnsw.org.au/about-dogs-nsw/join-dogs-nsw.html

3. Once you're a member of DogsNSW you will be sent a Gazette/Magazine every month with the details of the upcoming trials (all of them, not just obedience). You work out which ones you want to enter, write a cheque for the amount and complete the application form (you will have received a couple of copies from DogsNSW when you joined, but you can also there are also copies that you can print out floating around - just ask someone who trials regularly, they'll probably have one).

4. Send the cheque and application form and a self-addressed envelope (so you can get the number you wear in the ring back in the mail) to the address listed in the gazette for that particular trial.

Just wanted to add that in Qld you are only allowed to register one non-pedigree dog with the CCCQ (Dogs Qld) in your lifetime. The only exclusion to this is if you join and register multiple dogs at the one time. If your dogs are pedigreed then you can register as many as you want.
