angelnkids
hi everyone we have now decided to section off a part of the garden for the dog when we out instead of in the laundry, what i was wondering is it best to get him a dog kennel, esp since its coming up to summer? Theres no shaded area at the mo, although we could put his crate out there, and put a towel over it, would that be enough to keep him cooler, or would a dog kennel be better, if so what kind is best, will they stay cooler in there when its really hot? im wondering too if im best to buy him a little wading pool so he can dip in there when its really hot, and we are workin or out? thanks tracy
poodlefan
Definitely buy him a kennel. A wood or insulated plastic one would be best. I'd be looking at a shade sail too. Tiny breeds have limited ability to regulate their body temperatures so he'll suffer in the heat. Any chance you could put a dog(or cat) door into the laundry - that would be nice and cool. You can actually get a full length insert with a door that fits into the door track so you don't have to cut the glass. I think they are called Pigs in Mud doors or similar???? persephone
leaving him outside without a shade sail/tree/verandah is a really bad plan A kennel will not be enough! It would be a bit like you sitting in your car ( with a door open) on a 40 degree day!! Cover the pen with shadecloth..or buy a large shade sail kit . Those dog doors look good
shelby-001
Is there no access to a patio or anything similar? Our guys are outside permanently, we don't let them inside at all, but their beds are up on the patio, which is almost an alcove style patio in the house, it is covered on 2.5 sides. The beds are in the corner that is most protected so they can always get completely out of the sun/rain/wind etc and the roof is obviously insulated as it is part of the house roof. Also they have access to the open bay of the shed where the truck is parked so they have plenty of shelter. I have to agree with the others that a dog kennel would need some other form of shad over it to keep it cool. But at least it would get them out of the wind and rain, so if in the shade and cool enough would be fine.

Tilly
We put a tarp over the top of the clothes line to create some shade when we put the pup out that side of the yard. The grass eventually died so we replaced it with a piece of shadecloth ... but he still had a kennel to protect him from the rain and wind. poodlefan
when i know i can trust him not to chew the toys he can go under the alfresco. In the case of my dogs that would be NEVER! Dogs don't differentiate between kids toys and their own. Might not be a bad idea to put a toy box outside and start encouraging the practice of putting toys in it after play. shells
Pig in mud doors are great. We have one (and I have 2 small children) and it is a lifesaver as it saves me going backwards and forwards to the door all day (though my 22 month old also uses it as her escape hatch LOL) http://www.kramar.com.au/catalogue2010/pet_doors.pdf You can ring around for them. Apparently Bunnings sell them but also look on online classifieds - thats where I picked mine up - half price! Otherwise if you look under "pets" in the Yellow pages there are often places that specialise in installing pet doors including in glass so that may be an option for you. Dogs don't differentiate between kids toys and their own. Might not be a bad idea to put a toy box outside and start encouraging the practice of putting toys in it after play. I just provide my dogs with lots of their own toys and make sure the kids toys are packed away. The kids have learnt that anything left on the ground is fair game but insaying that they are now 18 months old and really not interested in any toys (kids or theirs) unless it is a tennis ball. Nushie
Go to Bunnings if you are going to buy a pig in mud patio door. The ones in other stores start at $400 and range to $600 for the larger doors. Bunnings have then all for the one low price of $399.
Aso
We have a Dogue de Bordeaux puppy and they're quite prone to heat exhaustion so our breeder recommends having those clam shells in the yard filled with water when it gets hot so he can wade in at his leisure. He's also an outside dog but we have an enclosed verandah at the back and he lies FLAT on the concrete floor when he's hot :-)
