What a roller coaster ride you have been on over the past couple of days! Poor Chase and poor you! I am praying for a speedy and full recovery for your baby boy, and for peace and strength for you. puglvr Posted October 22, 2010 Share Posted October 22, 2010 Kaffy my GSD had pneumonia and a collapsed lung. They thought surgery would be needed. The specialist vet said he'd never seen a GSD with such a narrow chest due to the collapsed lung. They took swabs and grew cultures to find 3 "germs" so to speak causing the problem and once they worked out right antibiotics she went ahead in leaps and bounds. She spent a week at Werribee in Intensive care, came home onAB's and physio and steam tent instructions. Went back 4 weeks later and the couldn't believe it was the same dog. The vet didn't expect him to last 24 hrs from the time we took him in & he wasn't that sick we just new there was something a tad off so went to the vet ,he had very ealy signs & within 24 hrs was at death door . We nursed him at home he survived & lived another 5 yrs(he was 7 at the time). I would have to say having us around,doing physio was the best thing out.In my boys case he was so weak he couldn,t walk at all nor eat.he was on heavy meds plus we combined it with natural ,the noni juice worked wonders but it is stuff He wasn't the healthiest dog afterwards & it was almost like he ended up with asthma but he lived a very full & normal life running an acre just simple things like fires would make him weeze & he did end up with a bad heart which was associated to his illness but for a dog that was literally dead in many ways he recovered well all considering . It certainly has been such a roller coaster ride. While he is still fighting, I'll still fight for him. I didnt come all this way just to let him go. Its a miracle he is still alive after that first day. Like I said I thought he was dead by the time I got him on my back seat and most certainly didnt think he would survive the trip to the vets. What a little trooper! While he seems "ok" now Im dreading the possibility of him crashing again. Ive been reading a little on aspiration pneumonia and its so so serious. They are saying he has sever pneumonia, how can that be when he is quite lively at the moment. Of course he isnt running around, but he seems bright enough, giving lots of kisses, heavy tail wagging, sitting up and walking to and from the car. To my untrained eye he "looks" like he would be fine and I so want to believe that so I can relax, but Im so scared he's going to crash again. I literally feel sick in the stomach from worry and stress, when people use the term "sick with worry" I thought it was just a saying, but its not, Im feeling it, my head aches, my eyes feel like they are popping out of my head, I feel like I jsut want to sleep but I cant. The worse thing now is the waiting and not knowing whats going to happen, when can I let my self get a little hope? The good stories that have been posted are promising, but Im just not sure I can rlax a little yet. Bilbo Baggins, you sneaky bugger, lol, how'd you manage that?? I reckon I know,lol. My guess is you rang my vet, since there only 2 in town, you would have found it easy enough and you either asked straight out for my number or asked for the number of a bullmastiff breeder in the area??? Am I right huh? huh? Am I? Am I? Fifi, the vet from Melbourne has given me(and my vet) instructions on looking after him and have included physio in that. I'll have a read through it again later as when she went through it with me my head was still spinning. Showdog, what is Noni juice?? I guee the thing is now is Im not sure what started the whole thing. Was it the traet? Got stuck he tried to bring it up, vomited, aspirated which then caused the rest of the symptoms or was it an anaphylactic reaction which caused him to vomit and then aspirate? Well I am off to bed. That's what you need to do right now. Live in the moment. Not before. Not after. But now. Draw strength from doing just that. It helps. I promise. It is a human product that cancer people use,vile stuff the smell alone was enough to make me barf BUT my boy couldn't eat & the health aspect of this stuff is amazing .He wasn't on it long but it worked well for him BUT my boy was never like yours. We also used a caffeine product from the US that is no longer available in aust.As he was unable to walk we had to do regular physio to ensure the phlegm didn,t build up .we also had to make him walk because i do believe without making him feel loved that he would have given up.Our vet sad over & over again if it wasn't for our commitment he would have died.He slepted with me anyway but i did hourly wake ups through the night to do physio & get him to walk about .The first 72 hrs felt like a week. he was obviously on fluids within reason & food supplements BUT it was keeping him alert that was the key in my boy's case. As for time i was realistic & set 2 week goals ,when he reached each 2 week we where a tad more confident HE DID have alot of relapses & often severe . I found he recovered quickly from the pneumonia in that sense but he lost alot of weight & muscle condition during recovery & that was the hardest aspect to work with but not the end of the world & in many ways with your boy being young it would be easier than at full adult weight. Room air is 20% oxygen. An oxygen cage typically is set to deliver 40% oxygen (higher percentages over long term are actually toxic to lung cells), and special oxygen-delivery hoods are also popular. A patient who requires this level of support is extremely sick. and this at the bottom. Prognosis ultimately depends on what the underlying cause was but the good news is that most patients are not sick enough to require oxygen therapy and the majority of these ultimately recover with proper treatment. Chase is on Oxygen(plus the AB's and IV etc) . Should I be expecting him to go right down hill before he starts to get better? Or can he be 'severe' on the inside but not showing it on the outside? I guess there probably arent any answers right now and I just need to wait it out, but the wondering is killing me. ETA: Thank you for that info on Noni juice Showdog.
