 I can't stop laughing at a sniffing dog with puckering bum image...

That will keep me amused all day!!!

 I'm laughing at you laughing!

 Stop it!!! I guess I've just seen it too many times... my own gangly legged goofball with her own puckering bum (that strikes fear in my heart) and the familiar curling of the rear end... And when I tug her along, the sad expression I get and the 'puckering' effect... and the kind of crab walk with the rear end still slightly curled under.

Oh goodness... I need to get a life. I've seen too much puckering in my time!!!

Lewis loves an audience! I always have bags as when they need to go they just do. Lewis will be walking along and then go in a few seconds, so not much warning. I rarely have my dogs out and about down town so it isn't much of an issue.

LMAO What a hilarious thread. My dogs go when they gotta go. Usually it's NOT when walking around footpaths etc but even if it is - I have plastic bags and their poo is generally healthy firm etc so very easy to pick up.

But really, apart from the odd rushing the dog on a lead to get them away from somewhere totally unsuitable - say, a cafe LMAO I've never really worried about it. As long as it's picked up so what?

I don't like it but I do it.

Sure beats leaving it for others to tread, roll their pram, bike or wheelchair in.

Nappy bags help deaden the smell. :D

Would you consider bog training the dogs, or do you think its a load of crap?

Around here, I think carrying around a loaded poo bag is like a badge of honor. You advertise "I pick up after my dog", except I know one lady who puts her phone and car keys in her poo bag and doesn't pick up after her dog at Victoria Park. Very distinctive looking dog too.

My dog won't crap on a footpath or verge of footpath unless she's unwell and can't hang on. Fortunately that's only happened once and it was garbage day, so I just added to someone's bin load.

What I really hate is people who load up a plastic poo bag and then just leave it there on the ground WTF. Some have said - oh I'll pick it up on the way home - but they always forget. If you're not going to put the bag in the bin, and you're at the beach - just don't bother with the bag at all. And please - don't cover a soggy crap with leaves or lawn clippings on a playing field. At least if we can see it we've got a chance of cleaning it up, and it's got a chance of drying out before game time. Some people have got no brains at all.

I've always encouraged my dogs to go whenever they feel the need. I just clean it up straight away and put it in the nearest bin.

My thoughts (which may or may not be shared with anyone else) is that if something should happen to me and my dogs need to be looked after by someone else; the dogs will not be afraid to toilet at another person's property or on the side of the road whilst travelling a long distance.

It's really not hard to pocket two biodegradable bags and then use them and carry them to the nearest bin if your dog needs to deficate.

Wow do the people who say they dont let their dogs poo on lead refuse their own child to poo in a nappy? If a dog has to go, it has to go. Just take bags out on walkies and clean up after your dog rather than drag him down the street.

Interesting comparison...

a dog can be trained not to toilet in certain places. I see no toileting while walking on lead pretty much the same as house training a dog. You wouldn't just let your dog cr*p all over your house?

As long as the dog is provided ample opportunity to toilet throughoout the day, there is no problem.

If my dog needs to go on lead, i don't drag her away or get angry or upset I simply don't reward that.

I also provide ample opportunity for toileting elsewhere before we embark on "the walk" so the probability of her needing to go on walk is minimal.

Healthy dogs should really only need to go 2-3 times a day anyway.

I also have a toilet command so i can actually get my dog to go when it is convienent/necessary.

My Dane does lovely small poos!

I would never think of stopping him from going to the toilet if he needed to. He's an animal. If his body tells him he needs to pass something, he needs to pass it.

ummm, i don't think you can actually stop a dog that needs to go.....

You can only encourage them to either go in a certian spot

or go on command

I dont reward it either. I just pick it up and bin it. It's not difficult. I didnt mention rewarding when they poo in public - I just commented that if they have to go when we're out and about, I dont stop them.

I don't think anyone in their right mind would try and stop a dog that really needs to go

I don't know why people find it weird/unkind that people do try and minimise the likelihood of dogs going in public

I don't know about "bog training". I live in the country so it's not usually a big deal for me to pick up poo and drop it in the nearest bin - there's not a lot of people wandering about to worry about how I look carrying a small bag of doggy poo - but I wouldn't care anyway. Might be different in the city. I dunno - I dont want to live in a city.

I have enough to do training these critters with other things. I'm really not fussed about dogs doing what comes naturally.

As long as it's not going into waterways or lying around for people to walk in etc I don't have a problem with it.

My dogs will toilet on command as well. I usueally give them a run around before going somewhere and tell them to go toilet. If they do great if not I carry a bag, pick it up and bin it. I don't have to walk too far carrying a bag so it doesn't worry me. It is part of dog ownership.

I can see the reasoning behing Guide dog puppies being taught to toilet on command and them not wanting the dog to toiklet whilest walking. That will have its benefits. I am sure however these dogs are given ample opportunity to toilet when required.

Minimising is one thing, I think most dog owners do subconciously do that. Trying to completely STOP a normal bodily function is another altogether.

Sheesh, I know what I'd like to do to somebody who stops me from going to the lav when I need to. Mr Ellz has tried once and I threatened to take his head off and poo in the hole!! :D
