Am I The Only One Who Doesn't Let Their Dogs Take A Public Dump?

I don't allow my dog to toilet on lead.

But she is allowed to to toilet at the dog park where of course i pick up if she does.

I always toilet her before we leave for a walk.

I think most dogs are capable of holding it in for a few hours unless they are unwell.

I do carry bags just in case.

If we were to do a really long walk (over 2 hrs) I would probably find a spot to let her go, and allow her to go where i say.

But she isn't old enough for that yet anyway.

You don't see guide dogs just randomly toileting LOL

Exercise stimulates the gut - I figure seeing as I'm exercising them, its a bit unfair to ask them to hold it.

I don't let the boys pee on people's gardens though - that's more marking behaviour.

I am home all day, so my girls get to run around outside, then they can dump behind the bush in the backyard.

We had a show yesterday and the WGSD ate some filth the night before, she had the runs in the morning so I obviously gave her oppurtunitys to have a squirt out. I am not a bog nazi, but life would be a lot easier for people if they had a bit of poo control, especially those who pretend their dog didnt shit, do a sly kick and keep on going.

I had to train the WGSD to go on lead or she would hold for too long. I can read her like a book. Some breeds take things to extremes. My fault but I fixed it soon enough.

obviously, if the dog is unwell... nothing you can do about that!

Puppy raisers are specifically instructed to try not to let the dog toilet while on lead. It can apparently be a very hard habit to break.

When my pup is at work or uni with me, or course I take her out to a toilet area on lead and allow her to toilet (when i give the command). But on a general outing or walk- no.

It sounds controlling, but they are working dogs after all and can't just s*** all over the place LOL

There is a guide dog at my workplace and he does toilet when in his harness. His owner works full-time so he does need to go sometimes. His owner takes him outside to a certain spot and then attaches a little bag/

well they can't be expected to hold on all day.

but they would never (hopefully) toilet while they were guiding.

ETA sorry I should have said: i don't let my dog toilet on lead when we are out walking.

I do take her out on lead to a designated toilet area at uni and work and ask her to go there.

I've been known to fast track it down the road dragging a sniffing dog with a puckering bum so that he doesn't drop at an awkward or inappropriate place but that's about it.

BAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA The visual image I have in my head made me laugh out loud at work. We've all been there I think.

Aussielover, I fully agree that a guidedog shouldn't toilet while in harness. But it is interesting that the instructors don't want to let you toilet the dogs on lead at all! As has been said there are times when it isn't safe to let them off lead to toilet I would have thought just not letting them toilet without a cue would be the better option?

My dogs toilet in public but generally on cue. I have one bitch who will always doing a number 2 on arrival at a show/trialing ground. And my kelpie boy will only ever do a number 2 in public if he can't hold on any more.

No, only on lead when walking. I often take my pup out on lead at work or uni for a toilet break where she can toilet on cue in the area that i choose.

Its funny because it seems quite easy to get them into certain toilet habits.

I know some dogs who will only toilet in their yard. And some dogs won't toilet in the yard at all!

Or fed really crap dog food. Having seen the steaming piles of mousse like stuff that comes out of some dog's rear ends, I can understand why their owners aren't keen on picking it up either.
