Eating Flies!

How does the old poem go?...

The dog that ate the cat that ate the mouse that ate the cheese...

Or my childhood favourite song by Burle Ives.

There was an old lady who swallowed a fly.

It was a children's rhyme that Burl Ives put to music. I think it was originally one of those 'memory rhymes' taught to children.

There was an old lady who swallowed a fly

I don't know why she swallowed a fly - perhaps she'll die!

There was an old lady who swallowed a spider,

That wriggled and wiggled and tiggled inside her;

She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;

I don't know why she swallowed a fly - Perhaps she'll die!

There was an old lady who swallowed a bird;

How absurd to swallow a bird.

She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,

She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;

I don't know why she swallowed a fly - Perhaps she'll die!

There was an old lady who swallowed a cat;

Fancy that to swallow a cat!

She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,

She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,

She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;

I don't know why she swallowed a fly - Perhaps she'll die!

There was an old lady that swallowed a dog;

What a hog, to swallow a dog;

She swallowed the dog to catch the cat,

She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,

She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,

She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;

I don't know why she swallowed a fly - Perhaps she'll die!

There was an old lady who swallowed a cow,

I don't know how she swallowed a cow;

She swallowed the cow to catch the dog,

She swallowed the dog to catch the cat,

She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,

She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,

She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;

I don't know why she swallowed a fly - Perhaps she'll die!

There was an old lady who swallowed a horse...

She's dead, of course!

My pup LOVES chasing and catching flies. Unfortunately, a lot of the time that means her jumping all over the couch or smearing the windows with her nose in her attempts to catch them. :laugh:

OT - but Akira looks like she should be a member of "Kiss" :rofl:

Haha, she's a bit Gene Simmons, hey? And she also has the longest tongue ever, Ker can attest to that! The guy we got her from wanted to call her Zorro or Batman because of her mask. We scrapped that, seeing as she's a girl. :D

OH and Akira became a team today. OH trapped the flies against the sliding door and Akira caught them and ate them.

Well, it could be harmful if said fly is sitting on your cheek when the dog decides to catch it!

(Don't laugh - this happened to me with one of my own dogs once. I nearly jumped out of my skin - but full points she got the fly alright!!!)

Pup and I both hunt flies together (when they get inside) it's the funniest thing I'm there to find it, then she goes for it, misses a lot though, so she watches me looking for it until we go for it again. This can go on for over an hour :laugh:

She also loves moths but way easier to get.

Hi everyone

I'd appreciate it if someone could tell me whether my dog eating blowflies is harmful in any way. Max catches and eats any that fly into the house and I'm concerned that it may cause worms or digestive problems.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hmmmmm......... they do lick their butts :laugh:

:laugh:
