dandybrush Posted October 14, 2010 Share Posted October 14, 2010 ok i have looked through the tick thread pinned in the forum proban seems to be the best for ticks, however they have to bite to be stopped, so from what i understand they should be on proban and something else to stop them. i want to know what you are using for ticks, and does it work? aussielover Posted October 14, 2010 Share Posted October 14, 2010 If he swims the tick collar won't be effective! I am using frontline and advantix, alternating the two very two weeks. Have not had any ticks yet. Was using a tick collar as well but kept forgetting to take it off for swimming. If you do remeber to take it off for a swim it takes 24 hrs to be effective again so not worth it imo. I would use proban on a coated breed for sure. aussielover Posted October 14, 2010 Share Posted October 14, 2010 Oh sorry i just meant medium- long haired dog inn general (like my last dog). I wasn't specifically referring to your dog. You're basically making your dog toxic to ticks - to do that you're loading the dog with a chemical substance than can be highly toxic if the dog has prolonged exposure or achieves a high enough dose. A weekly permoxin rinse is meant to be pretty effective. You can also make it into a spray for more frequent use. frufru Posted October 15, 2010 Share Posted October 15, 2010 (edited) As I said in a previous thread - one of the local vets has her own dog on Proban - we live in an extreme tick area and you have to weigh the risks up. My old girl was hospitalised twice for ticks as a younger dog and I am sure this contributed to her heart condition which eventually killed her - she never got a tick whilst on Proban. Other chemicals are not without risk either. I usually put my show dogs on Proban as I am sure the frequent washing associated with showing a poodle decreases the efficacy of topspots not to mention the greaseball you get on the back of the neck. My retired male wears a tick collar and has a very short haircut in summer and we never go bush during summer our walking is done round the village. I meant to ask the vet about Proban but completely forgot. I live in a high tick area. We know his vet outside of a professional capacity and have been frequently hearing, for the past couple of weeks, the number of tick cases they're seeing. I buy the largest pack then squeeze it into a very small container & use a small needleless syringe to measure the appropriate amount to use on her. The amount is .1ml per kg of dog. On my 18 kilo dog I give a little extra ...about 2.2 to 2.5 ml. this way it works out a lot cheaper. From November to February I also put her on Proban. However even with both Advantix & Proban being used she still gets covered in little grass ticks & sometimes I resort to the Permoxin as well. Unfortunately, the ticks have to still attach & bite before they die & fall off.
